September 15 - Radiance of the Gospel
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” – 2 Corinthians 4:4
The truth of the gospel-the "good news" about Jesus-is veiled from those who are perishing. This was Paul's comment in the previous verse (2 Corinthians 4:3). In the previous chapter, Paul wrote about a veil that keeps those hardened by sin from seeing God's glory. This glory is revealed to humanity in Christ, but the veil is only removed from those who turn to the LORD (2 Corinthians 3:16). Then they can see God's glory. Those who resist will be made unable to see the truth at all.
After insisting that he and his co-workers teach the gospel openly, Paul has repeated that this does not mean everyone understands his teaching. The truth is obscured from those currently destined for eternal death apart from God. They are perishing because they do not understand the truth and cannot understand it because they refuse to.
Paul describes truth as the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. Christ is God's revelation of Himself to humanity (John 1:14; Hebrews 1:3). God means for humans to know Him by knowing Christ. Only those who come to Him through faith in Christ can see God's glory. Those who see it begin to be transformed to become more and more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18). So Paul has now identified two sources of spiritual blindness: sin inside of unbelievers and the work of Satan to keep them spiritually blind.
Christians are people who are constantly engaged in a spiritual battle. According to the Bible, the opponents of our spiritual battle are the devil and fallen spirits, which are rulers of this world (Ephesians 6:12). These evil spirits are in heavenly realms and are called “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). These evil demons and spirits are described in many words such as ‘rulers,’ ‘authorities,’ ‘powers of this dark world, ‘spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms’ and reveal the fact that they possess tremendous spiritual scheme and formation.
Therefore, the Bible tells us that this world is under the control of the evil one. “We know that we are children of God and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 John. 5:19). “In which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2). “To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18). This is why Satan said if Christ bowed down to him, he would give Him this world (Matthew 4:8- 9).
Our culture has many demonic messages and ideologies in which good cannot be discerned from evil. Many satanic activities appear in many forms today, so this world is often called an evil empire. Today, in a world where it is hard to discern good and evil in the areas of ideology, culture, and religion, we ought to fight against Satan, who is the ruler of the air, in the spiritual battle and win the victory; thus approaching the completion of God’s kingdom.

복음의 진리, 즉 예수님의 복음은 멸망하는 사람들에게는 가려져 있다고 바로 전 구절에서 바울이 주장합니다(고후 4:3). 그는 고린도후서 3장에서 죄로 굳어진 사람들은 하나님의 영광이 베일로 가려져 있어서 보지 못한다고 말합니다. 그리스도안에서 하나님의 영광이 나타났지만 오직 주님께로 향하는 자들만 베일이 벗겨져(고후 3:16) 하나님의 영광을 볼 수 있다고 말합니다. 복음을 믿지 않고 반대하는 자들은 복음의 진리를 전혀 보지 못합니다.
바울은 모든 사람들에게 반복적이고 공개적으로 복음을 가르쳐왔다고 주장하지만 모든 사람이 그의 복음의 가르침을 이해하고 있는 것은 아니라고 말합니다. 현재 하나님을 떠나 영원한 죽음을 기다리는 사람들에게는 복음의 진리의 베일로 가려져 있습니다. 이 사람들은 복음의 진리를 깨닫지 못하고 멸망하게 되는 것은 진리 깨닫기를 거부하고 있기 때문입니다.
바울은 진리를 가리켜 하나님의 형상이신 그리스도의 영광의 복음의 빛으로 설명합니다. 예수 그리스도는 하나님께서 인간에게 자신을 계시하신 메시야 입니다(요 1:14; 히 1:3). 하나님은 사람들이 그리스도를 앎으로 그를 알기를 원하십니다. 오직 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님께 나아오는 자들만이 하나님의 영광을 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님의 영광을 보는 자는 예수님을 닮아 변화하기 시작합니다(고후 3:18). 바울은 영적 소경의 두 가지 원인을 말하는데, 즉 불신자들의 내면에 있는 죄와 영적으로 소경되게 하는 사탄의 역사가 있음을 증거합니다.
그리스도인들은 이 세상에서 끊임없이 영적 전쟁에서 싸우고 있는 자들입니다. 성경은 우리의 영적 전쟁의 적들은 이 세상의 주권자들인 마귀와 타락한 영들(엡 6:12)이라고 말합니다. 이 악하고 타락한 영들을 가리켜 성경은 "공중의 권세 잡은자"(엡 2:2)라고 가르치며 이 악한 마귀와 영들은 '권세 잡은자,' '불순종의 아들,' ‘세상의 풍조,' 등 많은 다양한 다른 이름으로 묘사되어 있고 엄청난 영적 계략과 영력을 가지고 이 세상에서 역사하고 있다고 성경은 말하고 있습니다.
그러므로 이 세상이 악한 자의 권세 아래 있다고 성경은 말씀합니다. "우리가 알거니와 온 세상이 악한 자의 지배 아래 있는 줄을 알거니라"(요일 5:19). "그때에 너희는 그 가은데서 행하여 이 세상 풍조를 따르고 공중의 권세 잡은 자를 따랐으니 곧 지금 불순종의 아들들 가운데 역사하는 영이라” (엡 2:2). "그 눈을 뜨게하여 어둠에서 빛으로 사탄의 권세에서 하나님께로 돌아오게 하고 죄 사함과 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 무리 가운데서 기업을 얻게 하리라 하더이다”(행 26:18). 사탄은 그에게 절하면 이 세상을 주겠다고 그리스도에게 말한 것입니다(마 4:8-9).
오늘날 우리의 삶과 문화속에서 선과 악을 구별하기 어려운 사탄적이고 마귀적인 사상과 이념들이 많이 있음을 쉽게 발견합니다. 오늘날 사탄의 역사와 활동이 다양한 형태로 나타나기 때문에 세상을 가리켜 흔히 악한 영이 다스리는 악령의 제국이라 부르기도 합니다. 우리 그리스도인들은 오늘날 사상과 이념, 문화와 종교, 그리고 각 방면에서 선악을 분별하기 어려운 세상과 영적 전쟁에서 공중의 권세 잡은 사탄과 싸워 반드시 승리해야 하며 하나님 나라의 이 땅에 임하도록 힘써야 합니다.
