September 23 - Only by Grace

“And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” –Romans 11:6

Paul wrote in the previous verse that God has chosen them for Himself by His grace. Now, Paul restates what grace means. He wants to dispel any notion that Israelites stand with God because of their works. Grace means receiving an unearned gift. It is always given and never

paid for. The idea that a person's work—such as keeping the law could contribute to receiving God's grace is self-contradicting. If that were possible, grace would not be grace, Paul writes. Those who remain as the remnant of faithful Israel understand that their works have not saved them. They have come to God by faith in Christ. While this verse is meant to prove a point about God and Israel, it also draws a clear line regarding theology. There is no gray area between works-based salvation and grace-based salvation. None. Any dependence on works—adherence to the law, undergoing rituals, performing sacraments, or good deeds—is a rejection of grace. This is an often-resisted truth, but it is the clear teaching of Scripture. If works, in any sense, contribute to salvation, then that salvation is no longer "by grace."

If our deeds can save us, how can we receive salvation? The Bible says that only God’s grace can save us. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Then what does grace mean? God’s favor gives grace without paying the price for it, and it is the love of God given unconditionally to a person who doesn’t deserve to receive it. Grace is the gift of God that is freely given (Romans 11:6). In other words, if there is a very small deed, it cannot be grace. Nobody can be saved without God’s grace. We can’t pay for it. Salvation can only be received through God’s grace. Merits and good works cannot meet God’s righteous standard.

For example, imagine a small plane having a problem and an emergency landing in the middle of the South Pacific about 1,000 miles from land. Imagine that on this plane, there are three people. One person is an Olympic swimmer. The other person is a mediocre swimmer. The last person has never swum before. The Olympic swimmer yells at them, “Follow me,” and swims to the seashore about 1,000 miles away. The other two swim toward the seashore, following the Olympic swimmer. The person who never swam drowns in water in less than 30 seconds. The person who is a mediocre swimmer swims for about 30 minutes and drowns. The Olympic swimmer swims for 24 hours and is 50 miles from the plane. But to reach the seashore, he has to keep swimming for at least 475 hours, which means he has to keep swimming for 19 days. He will drown if he can’t swim to the seashore. He is no different than the person who died in 30 seconds and 30 minutes.

There is a deep truth to this story. Even if we are the best people in the world, we cannot save ourselves by doing good work. But the one who believes salvation is received apart from one’s deeds is closest to the gate of salvation. The reason for Jesus saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3) is right here.

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me was! I once was lost but now am found. I was blind, but now I see.” – John Newton.

Today’s Prayer: Entrust all your loved ones, including all their troubles, to the excellent care of God. Ask him to work his purpose in their lives.

Prayer Pointer: Prayer is, first and foremost, an expression of an intimate relationship with God.  – John Guest
