October 15 - The Fulfillment of the Law

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”  Matthew 5:17

Jesus counters the lie that He calls for the law of Moses to be "abolished." He tells everyone listening that His intent is not to discard the law or the Prophets. The Jewish law of Moses consisted of the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch. "The Prophets" include most of the rest of what Christians now call the Old Testament, especially books by Isaiah, Jeremiah, and other prophets sent by God to deliver His messages to Israel. The book of Hebrews explains how God always intended the old covenant to lead to a new covenant (Hebrews 8:6–8). That transition does not eradicate what God has spoken but completes its intended purpose. As the Son of God, the God who gave the law to Moses and gave the prophecies to the prophets, Jesus would have no desire to wipe out those messages. Instead, Jesus declares He has come "to fulfill" the law and the Prophets. This is a key point of understanding Scripture: everything in the Jewish Scriptures—what we now call the Old Testament—has been "pointing forward" to the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah. The law described a life of perfect, sinless righteousness, which no Israelite had been able to fulfill until Jesus arrived. He was the first and last to accomplish this.

Jesus brought God and us near through his blood and made us one. Paul said, “But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:13-14). How did Jesus tear down the dividing wall through his death?

First, Jesus abolished the law of commandments. “…by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulation” (Ephesians 2:15; Matthew 5:17). Christ fulfilled all the ethical laws by obeying them. However, he abolished all the ceremonial laws. Therefore, these ritual laws that became the barriers between Jews and Gentiles, such as foot washing and all the things restricted on the Sabbath, were no longer needed. Since Jesus fulfilled all the moral laws and was in charge of our sins, we can receive freedom and come forward to God (2 Cor. 3:6-15). This is the gospel we received (Ephesians 2:8, 9).

Second, Jesus created a new person in himself. Paul said, “His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace” (Ephesians 2:15). Jesus has made a new nation by his death. Jesus did not change Jews to Christians nor change Gentiles to Jews. Jesus created new men (Ephesians 2:10). We have become God’s masterpiece in Jesus Christ and a new nation. Thus, we can only conquer racial discrimination, prejudice, hatred, and isolation in Jesus Christ.

Third, Jesus abolished the dividing wall so that we could reconcile with God. Paul wrote, “…and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility” (Ephesians 2:16). At the cross, Jesus got rid of hostility and enmity of every human, including Jews and Gentiles: this has to be the perfect picture of a person’s heart and the church, which are reigned over by Christ. Peace and reconciliation in his public ministry were the purposes of Jesus’ coming into the world.

Today’s Prayer: Pray for sexual purity in all Christian leaders. This is an area where Satan works overtime to discredit the gospel.

Prayer PointerPrayer is the first, second, and third thing necessary to a minister. Pray, then, my dear brother; pray, pray, pray. – Edward Payson.
