October 16 - Mystery of God’s Election

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise and the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world, the despised things, and the things that are not to nullify the things that are.” - 1 Corinthians 1:27- 28

Paul has asked the Christians in Corinth to look at the people in their congregation, their brothers and sisters in Christ. In the previous verse, he wrote that very few of them are wise or powerful in human terms. Not many of them were born into nobility. His point is not to put them down but to emphasize that God does not require brilliance or power to become a believer. Many people rely so much on their intellect or wealth that it keeps them from trusting God (Matthew 19:23).Paul continues to reveal why so few Jews and Greeks believe in the crucified Christ. They think any god who could or would die on a cross to save people would be foolish and weak. Those who believe such a thing would also be foolish and weak. Only those God calls to believe in the gospel can see the strength and wisdom in this act of love. Paul confirms that God chooses foolish and weak people to come to Him through faith in Christ, as defined by human terms. Why does God do this? He wants to shame those who consider themselves too wise or strong to believe such a thing.Paul, of course, is not saying that the believers in Corinth—or the humble Christians in other places and times—are foolish and weak. The world sees them as idiots and losers because they occupy service positions, are not well-educated, or do not have money, rank, or social standing. Even more so, the world sees them as fools for believing in Jesus. In truth, though, by God's grace, these believers are the only ones who see enough to receive what is wise and strong.

In the Bible, God did not use wise and strong men. He used weak and foolish things to show His work (1 Corinthians 1:27-28). This does not mean evangelists are foolish, but it looks like that in the view of non believers. It also means God uses foolish people to change strong and wise people.

The more important meaning is that God’s point of view is not the same as a human’s point of view. God calls and uses people who are not worth much in human eyes so that, as the apostle Paul said, “no one may boast before him” (1 Corinthians 1:29). The Gospels tell us the same thing. God saved us through the cross. The message of the cross means nothing to non-believers. Therefore, the apostle Paul said, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The apostle Paul confessed that he was foolish and only wanted to know Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). The only reason why God chose and called us is to show the message of Jesus Christ and the cross. The reason is that the cross of Christ is what saves us. Even though we are weak and foolish, God is using us and giving us the wisdom to build God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 15:9).

I am a Jew, but the luminous figure of the Nazarene enthralls me….No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus.” - Albert Einstein.
