October 30 - Prayer and Mission

And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Colossians 4:3

This passage starts with a request for personal prayer, then transitions into a command regarding how Christians speak. Paul uses the metaphor of salt. In Paul's day, salt was valuable enough to be used as money and was treasured for its ability to preserve and flavor foods. In the same way, a Christian's speech should be helpful and valuable, ''flavored'' differently from the speech of non-believers, and preserve the message of Christ.

In addition to praying for themselves, Paul asks the Colossian Christians to pray for him and those with him. Paul was honest about his need for prayer, especially since he was bound under house arrest then. It's interesting to note that Paul does not specifically ask the Christians of Colossae to pray for his freedom. Instead, he asks them to petition God for opportunities to share the gospel. Paul also spoke of "doors" opened for his preaching ministry in 1 Corinthians 16:9 and 2 Corinthians 2:12.

Though only under house arrest in this imprisonment, Paul could not leave or travel freely. The reason for his captivity was his work for the gospel. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem by those who opposed him and would remain incarcerated until appealing to Caesar to avoid an assassination attempt. At the time of his writing, he was awaiting trial in Rome.

Today, one of the problems in the mission field is that there are still many tribes that have not heard the gospel and that there are not enough missionaries for those unreached tribes. When Jesus was on earth, he mentioned this problem to his disciples. He told his disciples that there were many unsaved and not enough gospel workers (Matthew 9:37). The problem of few workers is still true today. In this situation, our action is demanded. The harvest owner is God, who called his workers to work in a field that God has already prepared (Matthew 13:23). The workers must obey God’s calling. The harvest of lost souls begins with God and ends with God.

Therefore, the prayer for extending God’s kingdom is crucial. God raises those who give their lives to him and sends them to every part of the world. Therefore, one of the important tasks of the workers in God’s field is to pray for more workers to come for the harvest. The work of harvest is a spiritual battle. Our battle is against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12). We need to equip ourselves with prayers for this spiritual battle.

We become the worldwide Christian church when we pray for the world mission. One prayer warrior shared that he prays with the world map before him. God has commanded us to witness the whole world. Whether we live far or near, we are responsible for lost people. Satan tries his best to hinder our work of mission, but prayers bring change. The prayer brings the power of an almighty God. There is church growth and the successful ministry of gospel workers in God's power. The evil spiritual forces get crushed and subdued. Only prayer brings the power to do such things (Luke 10:2).

Today’s Prayer: Pray that your deacons may be God’s hands of compassion and presence to those struggling, frightened, or lonely.

Prayer PointerOne of the great paradoxes of the Christian faith is that God wants us to talk to Him about everything going on in our lives, even though He already knows everything. So why pray? Because there is a devil, and prayer is a God-appointed way to resist Him. Because prayer is God's way of obtaining what we need from Him.  Because prayer is the means God has appointed for us to find "grace to help in time of need." Because prayer with thanksgiving is God's way for us to obtain freedom from anxiety and to receive "the peace of God.” - R.A. Toray
