November 1 - Prayer in Faith

“And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the LORD will raise him.”  James 5:15

In verse 15, James describes the expected result of that "prayer offered in faith" by the elders: The LORD will raise the person. Any sins he has committed will be forgiven. If these two verses describe a physically ill person, physical healing is promised. If they describe a person struggling with a weak faith, the promise is a restored trust in God. In either case, if the cause of the problem is because of sin in that person's life, that sin will be forgiven. Any verse that seems to offer an unconditional promise of physical healing, even in response to a prayer of faith, may confuse. Will every person following these steps in this order be healed of any illness at any time? It's a delicate question, but the promise of the verse requires us to look at the language closely. When the church elders pray on behalf of this person with sincere faith while anointing them with oil, the LORD will raise this person. The promise doesn't suggest when or how God will raise him. Perhaps it will be immediate. Perhaps it will be in eternity, which is a less satisfying answer. In any case, the believer in Christ will always be raised eventually, and we can be assured forever.

The prayer life for Christians should be consistent throughout her lifetime. We should start each day with prayer and end the day with prayer. We are filled with the Spirit if we unceasingly pray. Christians should pray in times of pain and in times of sickness. The greatest problem is that Christians do not pray. James pointed out, “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3). And God promised to us that He would answer our prayer: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14).

When we pray for healing, we should pray for healing our sicknesses and sins (James 5:15). Christians in early churches believed that all sickness came from sin. However, James does not agree with this point. He used the word ‘if’: “If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.” Furthermore, the disciples asked Jesus, looking at the man blind from his birth, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Then, Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life” (John 9:3). If a man got sick because of his sins, he should pray for forgiveness (James 5:15).

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah, the man of prayer, has been a good example: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced crops” (James 5:16-18). In addition, how we pray is important. Elijah prayed earnestly that it would not rain. In other words, he prayed with all his heart. We often pray formally, outwardly, but without our hearts. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. To pray effectively and powerfully, we should pray with all our hearts.

Today’s Prayer: Ask God to make you his hand of compassion in the life of one unsaved person this week.

Prayer PointerTo pray as God would have us pray is the greatest achievement on earth. Such a prayer life costs. It takes time….All praying saints have spent hours every day in prayer….There is no time to pray these days, but without time and much of it, we shall never learn to pray. - Samuel Chadwick
