November 25 - Thanks, Be To God

“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” – Colossians 1:12

Colossians 1:9–14 is a prayer for the Colossian Christians. Paul prays for their continued spiritual growth, including knowledge of God, His will, and wisdom. Paul also prays for their strength and endurance. In so praying, Paul reminds the believers of Colossae that salvation is entirely the work of God, who drastically changed their fate by rescuing them from sin.

In addition to praying for God's strength for the Christians in Colossae, Paul prayed for them to give thanks. Just as Paul prayed, giving thanks continually (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18), they were also to give thanks. Paul makes it clear that God alone is the one who provides salvation. It is by His grace through faith in Christ (John 3:16; Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:8–9). The inheritance of the saints in eternity with the LORD in heaven is something Paul often refers to in his writings (Galatians 3:18; Ephesians 1:11, 14; 5:5; Colossians 3:24). Ephesians 1:18 illustrates this concept clearly, speaking of "the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints."

Paul also mentions light, which is an important part of Hebrew thinking. According to the Jewish people, all knowledge and goodness were symbolized by "light," while sin and ignorance were characterized by "darkness." This is a theme of the apostle John, frequently used in his letters and the Gospel of John. Christians have a special reason to thank God, unlike non christians. The Apostle Paul said Christians have several special reasons to be thankful.

First, we ought to be thankful for our inheritance (Colossians 1:12). Just like a baby receives an inheritance right from the parents at birth, we Christians receive the right of inheritance, which God has prepared when we are born again (Matthew 25:31-34). Thus, we ought to be thankful for the free inheritance of heaven. Which is the first reason that we should thank God?

Second, we should be thankful for Jesus, who came to earth and saved us from the darkness. Paul spoke about Jesus, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15), “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy” (Colossians 1:18). If Jesus did not come in the flesh, the world could never be reconciled with God. Jesus Christ gave up his honor and throne, for he was born in a manger to save us.

Third, we should be thankful for the blood of Jesus because we are reconciled with God. “And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things are on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:20). “But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians 1:22). The Bible says that all humanity became an enemy of God because of sin, which meant a separation of relationship. Jesus’ death on the cross means a restored relationship with God. And now we are members of God’s family. Therefore, we should be thankful for our salvation and everything He has done for us.

Today’s Prayer: Jesus instructed his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Pray that God will bring about the day when “all nations” have the opportunity to hear and believe the gospel.
