November 28 - God’s Omnipresence

Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” - Psalm 10:1

David asks questions that many believers ask when troubles strike them. Where is God? Why isn't He intervening right here and right now? It is easy to praise the LORD when life goes smoothly, but not so easy to praise Him when troubles strike. This is where faith enters our relationship with the LORD: looking back on what we know of God to reassure us when unsure or unsettled (Hebrews 12:1).

Asaph, another psalmist, similarly felt conflict and doubt. In Psalm 73, he confesses that he almost lost his faith (Psalm 73:22) because the wicked were prospering and trouble-free. He felt constantly harassed despite striving to lead a godly life (Psalm 73:13–14). Despite his faith at Mount Carmel, Elijah must have felt the LORD had abandoned him (1 King 18:20–40). He had championed the LORD's cause against a host of false prophets, but when Jezebel put a contract on his life, he fled to the desert, where he seemed to question the LORD's absence and unfairness (1 King 19:10).

A problem of modern man is unbelief in the God of the universe because of rationalism and science. We recognize this as a problem because the psalmist - sees that the wicked are prospering and that there seems to be no justice (Psalm 10:1). He is therefore questioning whether God exists because He cannot understand how God, who he knows to be just and faithful, could allow these things to happen. He is perplexed that God is not intervening but seemingly standing far off. But, we need to realize that there are reasons why God does not always come to our rescue but stands afar.

First, our sins keep God distant from us. We tend to hide from God when we sin because we instinctively know that sin brings wrath. It is not God keeping us afar, but our transgressions that keep God afar.

Second, our unbelief keeps God distant from us. For example, Jesus did not perform miracles in Nazareth because of the unbelief in that place. It says, “He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And He was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:5-6).

Third, God sometimes stays away from us for His reasons. For instance, God sometimes chooses silence to judge sins and does not extend His helping hand. In such a case, it is a matter of God accomplishing His will according to His predestined time. People sin when they deny God’s existence. If a man denies God, God will deny that man. Man cannot know himself as long as he does not know God.

The wicked man says to himself, “God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees” (Psalm 10:11). This remark shows us that the wicked man does not believe that God is God Almighty, for the remark implies that God forgets and does not know everything, including the wicked deeds of man. Furthermore, his remark, “He covers his face,” shows that he does not believe that God is omnipresent, and “(he) never sees…” implies that this man thinks his future is in his own hands. God’s sovereignty is minimized, and man’s freedom is maximized. This is a continuation of the drama in the Garden of Eden. The almighty, all-knowing, omnipresent God is on our side, helping and loving us.

“What do you have to fear? Nothing. Whom do you have to fear? No one. Why? Because whoever has joined forces with God obtains three great privileges: omnipotence without power, intoxication without wine, and life without death.” - Francis of Assisi
