December 24 - Meditation of the Heart
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer.” – Psalms 19:14
David wanted his words and the thoughts of his heart to be acceptable to the LORD. When a worshiper brought an animal to the sanctuary to be sacrificed to the LORD, a priest would examine it to see if it was blemish-free. If a blemish was found, the LORD accepted neither the animal nor the worshiper (see Leviticus 1:3–10; 22:17–25).
Taking that concept of being "blemish-free" to heart, our words should comfort or edify those who hear them. Colossians 4:6 encourages us to use speech that is "gracious, seasoned with salt, so that [we] may know how [we] ought to answer each person." Hebrews 10:25 summons us to encourage one another. Ephesians 4:15 directs us to speak the truth in love, and Ephesians 5:19 tells us to "[address] one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs."
Jesus taught us that the heart is the source of our words. He declared, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). It is important, therefore, to fill the heart with Scripture (Psalm 119:11). In this Psalm, David addresses the LORD as his rock and redeemer. He recognized that the LORD was the provider of his security and salvation. By shedding His blood on the cross, Jesus is our Redeemer (1 Peter 1:18–19), and as our living LORD He keeps us safe (1 Peter 1:3–5).
When the darkness of sin and the devil’s deception overpower us, the Word of God instructs us when there is neither joy nor pleasure in us (John 8:34-44). The Word of God convicts and cleanses us through the power of the Holy Spirit. As John Calvin said, His word is like a mirror from which we can see our spiritual condition and predicament. God allows us to see our sins, and when we confess, He purifies us. John says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
We must be forgiven for our sins but empowered to live holy, sinless lives. That is why the psalmist prays, “Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me” (Psalms 19:13). For us not to be enslaved to sin, we must submit to the Holy Spirit and ask the LORD to reign over us.
Jesus instructs us to always meditate on the Word and to live a life of obedience to the Word: “If you hold to my teaching, you are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). We must want to live in His Word and the power of God, our rock and redeemer. Our God is the God of the great exodus and Calvary. God calls us to love, serve, and be holy living sacrifices unto Him by being free from all spiritual, social, and political bondage.
God’s purpose for teaching us His ways is so that we may know and worship Him and love and obey Him. We lead busy lives. We have many responsibilities and wear many hats in our homes and communities. However, we need to make it a priority in our lives to meditate on His word and strive to lead a life obedient to His word. Without constant meditation on the Word, we will quickly be pulled into worldliness and be merely satisfied with the things and conveniences of this world. Like the psalmist, we must desire the word of God more than pure gold.

다윗은 자신의 말과 마음속의 생각이 주님앞에 열납되기를 원했습니다. 누구든지 성전에 들어가서 하나님을 예배하기 원하는 자는 동물의 제물을 성소로 가져오면 제사장은 동물에 흠이 없는지 살펴보았습니다. 만일 흠이 발견되면 하나님은 그 동물이나 예배자를 열납하지 않았습니다(레 1:3-10; 22:17-25).
우리는 흠이 없는 제물이라는 개념을 새겨서 우리의 말로 사람들을 위로하거나 교화해야 합니다. 골로새서 4:6은 "은혜 가운데서 소금으로 맛을 냄과 같이"라는 말씀으로 각 사람에게 어떻게 대답해야 할지 알게 하라고 권면합니다. 히브리서 10:25은 서로 격려하라고 촉구합니다. 에베소서 4:1은 사랑으로 진리를 말하라고 지시하고, 에베소서 5:19은 "시와 찬미와 신령한 노래로 서로 화답하라고"고 말합니다.
예수님은 우리의 마음이 우리 말의 근원이라고 가르치며 "마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이라" (마 12:34)고 선포하십니다. 그러므로 마음을 말씀으로 채우는 것이 중요합니다(시 119:11). 시편 19편에서 다윗은 주님을 향하여 그의 반석이시며 그의 구속자로 부릅니다. 그는 주님께서 그의 안전과 구원을 책임져 주시는 것으로 인식합니다. 십자가에서 피 흘리신 예수님은 우리의 구속주이시고(벧전 1:18-19), 살아 계셔서 우리를 안전하게 지켜주십니다(벧전 1:3-5).
죄의 어두움속에서 마귀의 속삭임에 귀를 기울이면 말씀의 교훈을 받을 수 없고 삶에는 기쁨과 즐거움이 사라집니다(요8:34-44). 말씀은 성령의 도우심과 능력으로 죄를 깨닫게 하시며 죄를 정결케 하십니다. 요한 칼빈이 말한 대로, 말씀은 성도의 영적상태와 위기를 비추어 보는 거울과 같습니다. 하나님께서는 말씀을 통해 죄를 보게 하실 뿐만 아니라 그 죄를 자백할 때 정결케 해 주십니다. “만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 저는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 모든 불의에서 우리를 깨끗케 하실 것이요”(요일 1:9).
죄용서를 받아야 하지만 범죄하지 않고 거룩한 삶을 살아가야 합니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 “또 주의 종으로 고범 죄를 짓지 말게 하사 그 죄가 나를 주장치 못하게 하소서”(시 19:13)라고 기도합니다. 죄의 종이 되지 않으려면 성령께서 삶을 주장하고 주님께서 다스려야 합니다.
예수님은 말씀을 묵상하며 순종의 삶을 살아가라고 말씀합니다. “너희가 내 말에 거하면 참 내 제자가 되고 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라”(요 8:31-32). 반석이시고 구속자이신 하나님의 말씀과 그의 능력으로 살아가야 합니다. 우리가 믿는 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들은 출애굽시키시고 예수님의 죽음을 통해 보여주신 사랑의 하나님이십니다. 영적, 사회적, 정치적 속박에서 자유케 하신 하나님은 그를 섬기고 사랑하며 거룩한 삶을 살도록 우리를 초대합니다.
하나님께서 그의 길을 우리에게 보이시는 목적은 우리가 그를 알고 경배하며 사랑하고 순종하게 하기 위함입니다. 우리는 매주 분주한 삶을새 살아갑니다. 가정과 지역 사회에서 많은 책임을 지고 살아갑니다. 우리는 하나님의 말씀을 묵상하고 말씀에 순종하는 삶을 살기 위해 노력하고 삶의 우선 순위로 삼아야 합니다. 우리가 말씀을 끊임없이 묵상하지 않으면 금방 세속적인 것에 빠져 이 세상의 것들과 편리함에만 만족하게 됩니다. 시편 기자처럼 순금보다 하나님의 말씀을 더 갈망하는 것이 우리에게 절대적으로 중요합니다.
