December 26 - Pure Religion
“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” – John 17:15
Among the more challenging aspects of biblical faith is that God does not promise to take believers out of persecution or hardship. Rather, merely obeying Christ (John 14:15) can be enough to earn hatred from the unbelieving world (John 17:14; 1 Peter 4:4). God assures us He will be with
believers in their hardship (John 16:33), and what they experience is part of their preparation for something greater (Romans 8:18, 28).In keeping with that theme, Jesus reiterates that His prayer is not for God to remove Christians from the world (1 Corinthians 5:9–10). Rather, He prays for the durability of their faith (Hebrews 3:6; John 16:1–4). The only way for believers to reach others with the gospel (Matthew 28:19) is to demonstrate Christian truth in our own lives (Matthew 5:13–16; 1 Peter 3:15). This part of Jesus' High Priestly Prayer is most immediately about His closest disciples (Matthew 10:1–4); other than Judas (John 17:12), these men will carry on the teachings of Jesus after His death and resurrection. However, modern Christians (John 17:20) are also "in the world," yet commanded not to be "of the world" (John 17:14).
Generally, people define religion as an expression of worship through liturgy and ritual. But pure Christianity is beyond those liturgies and rituals. Jesus said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Matthew 15:8). Pure religion is to live from God’s point of view. Therefore, we should be able to see ourselves in our and God’s eyes.
Our goal as Christians is to grow until we all attain the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27).
Pure religion is to get real in the presence of God. It is to live in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit and the answer for people in urgent need. Pure and undefiled religion always results in deeds. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:16-18).
To live in pure religion without defilement, we should not love earthly things (1 John 2:15). We are responsible for helping people who are in need, yet we should not be of the world. We live in the world, not in the world. We should love people in the world but not love the sophisticated system (1 John 2:16-17). We lie to ourselves if we say we are pure without obeying God’s words. “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself, and his religion is worthless” (James 1:26). Pure religion we have in God is taking care of people in need and keeping ourselves out of temptation.
Today’s Prayer: Ask God to cause a woman who is planning the abortion of her baby to change her mind. Pray that abortion clinics will close for lack of business.

“내가 비옵는 것은 저희를 세상에서 데려가시기를 위함이 아니요 오직 악에 빠지지 않게 보전하시기를 위함이니이다” - 요 17:15
성경에서 말씀하고 있는 믿음의 어려운 부분중 하나는 하나님께서 믿는 자들을 박해나 고난에서 구하시겠다고 약속하지 않고 있다는 것입니다. 그리스도인들이 단지 하나님께 순종하는 것만으로도(요 14:15) 안 믿는 세상 사람들로부터 미움을 받기에 충분합니다(요 17:14; 벧전 4:4). 하나님은 우리에게 분명히 믿는 자들이 고난을 받을 때 함께하신다고 하며(요 16:33), 믿는 자들의 경험이 더 큰 것을 위한 준비의 한 부분이 되는 것입니다(롬 8:18, 28).
예수님의 기도에서 하나님께서 그리스도인들을 세상에서 데려가도록 기도하는 것이 아니라고 말씀합니다(고전 5:9-10). 오히려 그리스도인들의 믿음의 지속을 위해 기도합니다(히 3:6; 요 16:1-4). 믿는 자들이 믿지 않은 자들에게 복음으로 다가갈 수 있는 유일한 방법은(마 28:19) 우리의 삶에서 기독교 진리를 입증하는 것입니다(마 5:13-16; 벧전 3:15). 예수님의 대제사장 기도는 가장 가까운 제자들을 위한 기도입니다(마 10:1-4). 유다(요 17:12)를 제외한 제자들은 예수님의 죽음과 부활 이후에 예수님의 가르침을 계속 수행해 나갑니다. 현대 그리스도인들도 (요 17:20) "세상 안에" 있지만, "세상에 속하지" 말라는 명령을 받고 있습니다(요 17:14).
그리스도인들은 경건을 일반적으로 예식이나 의식을 통한 예배의 외적인 표현으로 이해합니다. 그러나 참된 경건은 어떤 예식이나 의식 그 이상의 것 입니다. 예수님은 “이 백성이 입술로 나를 존경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다”(마 15:8) 라고 말씀 하셨습니다. 참된 경건은 하나님의 관점에서 살아가는 모습입니다. 하나님의 관점에서 우리 자신들을 볼 줄 알아야 합니다.
그리스도인의 삶의 목표는 하나님을 아는 지식과 믿음에 하나가 되어 그리스도의 장성한 분량에 까지 자라는 것 입니다(엡 4:13). “하나님 아버지 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌아보고 또 자기를 지켜 세속에 물들지 아니하는 이것이라”(약 1:27).
참된 경건은 하나님 앞에서 살아가는 성령의 능력으로 주님 안에서 살아가는 삶 자체이고, 이웃의 필요에 빠르게 응답하는 삶입니다. 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 반드시 삶과 행위로 나타나야 합니다. “그가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고 우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라 누가 이 세상 재물을 가지고 형제의 궁핍함을 보고도 도와 줄 마음을 막으면 하나님의 사랑이 어찌 그 속에 거할까 보냐 자녀들아 우리가 말과 혀로만 사랑하지 말고 오직 행함과 진실함으로 하자”(요일 3:16-18).
우리가 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건한 삶을 원한다면 세상을 사랑하지 않아야 합니다(요일 2:15). 그리스도인은 이웃의 필요를 채우는 책임도 있지만 세속에 물들지 않도록 노력해야 합니다. 그리스도인은 세상에 살지만 세상에 속한 자가 아닙니다. 그리스도인은 세상 사람들을 사랑해야 하지만 세속적인 제도는 미워해야 합니다(요일 2:16-17). 말씀에 따라 살지 않으면서 스스로 경건하다고 말하는 것은 자신을 속이는 것 입니다. “누구든지 스스로 경건하다 생각하며 자기 혀를 재갈 먹이지 아니하고 자기 마음을 속이면 이 사람의 경건은 헛것이라”(약 1:26). 하나님 앞에서 참된 경건은 가난한 자들을 돌아보며 자신을 세상의 유혹에서 지키는 것 입니다.
오늘의 기도: 자기의 아기를 유산시키려는 여인들이 마음을 바꾸도록 기도하고, 유산시키는 병원들이 사업이 안되어 문을 닫도록 기도하십시오.
