January 2 - New Spirit and New Heart
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove your heart of stone from you and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” - Ezekiel 36:26-27
Regardless of time and place, most of us delight in new things and try to buy new things. Behind this psychology of craving for new materials, there must be a hidden desire to be renewed eternally inside us. “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly renewed day by day”(2 Corinthians 4:16).
Though we want to be renewed daily, the tragic reality is that we get closer to death every second. Even more tragic, the reality is that with our hearts longing for new things, we do not realize that each of us needs to be changed. Therefore, what we need in the coming year differs from the New Year or plans and resolutions. We need to become new people with new hearts. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come, the old has gone, the new is here!”(2 Corinthians 5:17).
The prophets in the Old Testament teach us that the people of God must have new hearts. First, we must become a new person with a new heart(Ezekiel 36:26, 27). Here, a new heart is the new essence of the person. The new heart signifies the change from a corrupted, evil, worldly, and lustful heart into a kind, holy, and spirit-filled heart. This new heart, however, is obtainable only through the Holy Spirit when God grants it to us. It does not happen just because we want to be renewed but only when God pours the new spirit on us. Without our efforts and works, it is only possible through the grace of God. The prophet Ezekiel speaks of how God will change the heart of stone, insensitive to sin, into a heart of flesh(Ezekiel 11:19, 20).
As we can see, being renewed by the spirit of God’s grace is the most crucial thing in the Christian life. When we have a renewed heart, we will be able to obey God as a new person who will do God’s work and live in the fruits of the Spirit. New life does not begin in a new environment but with a new heart.
This new life begins with a change in our direction and quality of life. The new life begins in our new birth into God’s family.
May God grant us the blessing of new life with a transformed mind this coming year! “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you can test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”(Romans 12:2). “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”(Psalm 86:11). If you have trusted the LORD Jesus Christ, he has given you a new heart. This is a reference to the new birth or salvation. "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?"(John 11:25, 26).
Neil Gaiman writes, “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something. We should attempt new things for the Gospel of Christ and the glory of God in the power of faith and the Holy Spirit for this new year.
Today’s Prayer: Pray that family members and friends will be a source of joy and blessing to each other and that together, they may experience the joy and blessing of the LORD. Pray that the Gospel may reach, touch, and renew the hearts and minds of people without hope today to bring a great harvest of souls into the church.

“또 새 영을 너희 속에 두고 새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이며 또 내 신을 너희 속에 두어 너희로 내 율례를 행하게 하리니 너희가 내 규례를 지켜 행할지니라” - 겔 36:26-27
우리 대부분은 언제나 새로운것을 좋아하고, 새로운 물건들을 구매하고 싶은 마음이 있습니다. 우리가 새것을 좋아하고 새로운 것에 관심을 가지는 이유는 우리의 마음에는 영원히 새로워지고 싶어 하는 숨겨진 본래적인 욕구가 있기 때문입니다. “그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니 우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 우리의 속 사람은 날로 새로워 지도다”(고후 4:16).
우리가 매일 새로워지기 원하면서도 매 순간 죽음에 더 가까이 가고 있다는 것은 비극적인 사실입니다. 더 비극적인 것은 우리의 마음이 새로운 것을 갈망하면서 우리 자신이 먼저 새 사람이 되어야 한다는 사실을 깨닫지 못하는 것입니다. 새해에 우리에게 필요한 것은 새로운 계획이나 새 결심이 아니라 새로운 마음으로 새 사람이 되는 것입니다. “누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고후 5:17).
구약의 선지자들은 하나님의 사람이 되려면 먼저 새로운 마음을 가진 새 사람이 되어야 했습니다(겔 36:26, 27). 구약에서 새로운 마음이란 새로워진 새 사람의 본성을 의미합니다. 새로운 마음은 추악하고 세속적인 정욕의 마음이 변하여 부드럽고 거룩하고 성령으로 충만한 마음을 가리킵니다. 그런데 이 새 마음은 하나님께서 주신다고 말씀합니다. 새 마음은 우리가 원해서 가지는 것이 아니라 오직 하나님께서 새 영을 주실 때, 새 마음의 새 사람으로 변화되는 것입니다. 새 사람이 되는 것은 우리의 노력이나 공로가 아닌 오직 하나님의 은혜로 되는 것입니다. 에스겔 선지자는 죄에 대해 민감하지 못한 굳은 마음을 하나님께서 부드러운 마음으로 변화시켜주신다고 말합니다(겔11:19, 20).
그리스도인에게 가장 중요한 것은 하나님의 은혜로 거듭나고 새로운 사람이 되는 것입니다. 우리가 그리스도인 되어 새 마음을 가지게 되면 새 사람으로 변화되어 하나님께 순종하며 주의 일을 하게 되며 우리의 삶에 많은 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 그리고 새로운 삶은 새로운 환경에서 시작되는 것이 아니라 새로운 마음에서 시작되는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 먼저 하나님의 가족으로 태어나는 거듭남의 질적인 변화로 새로운 방향으로 삶을 시작해야 합니다.
하나님께서 신년에는 변화된 마음과 함께 새로운 삶의 축복을 내려 주시기를 소원합니다. “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라”(롬 12:2). “여호와여 주의 도를 내게 가르치소서 내가 주의 진리에 행하오리니 일심으로 주의 이름을 경외하게 하소서”(시 86:11). 당신이 주 예수 그리스도를 믿었다면 그것은 하나님께서 당신에게 새 마음과 믿음을 주신 것 입니다. 이것은 거듭남 또는 구원받음에 대한 표시입니다. "나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고, 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐”(요 11:25, 26).

오늘의 기도 : 가족 식구들과 친구들이 기쁨과 축복의 원천이 되며, 서로가 축복이 되어 주님이 주시는 기쁨과 축복을 모두 경험할 수 있도록 기도하십시오. 복음이 전파되어 오늘날 세상에서 소망 없이 살아가는 자들의 마음과 생각이 변화되고 새로워져서 영혼의 큰 수확을 이루어 교회에 나올 수 있도록 기도하십시오.
