January 9 - Grace and Peace
“May our LORD Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” - 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17
We greet one another, desiring and hoping that others will be in peace. Hebrews concludes with blessings, saying goodbye, and wishing others peace, good health, and happiness. Apostle Paul almost always begins his letter with a greeting of grace and peace: “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the LORD Jesus Christ”(1 Corinthians 1:3).
Grace! It is one of the most beautiful words in the Bible. Here is a helpful acronym: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Our eternal riches in heaven – and every good thing we have or will receive – is an undeserved gift from God. God’s grace is evident in his mercy. He often delays punishment to give us time to turn to him. “But you, O LORD, are compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger abounding in love and faithfulness”(Psalm 86:15).
Grace can also refer to God’s goodwill toward us. Other qualities closely related to God’s grace are His love, kindness, patience, and forgiveness. Grace is love or favor of God without any payment. Paul speaks of God’s grace because he experienced peace and the grace of God. This grace and peace of God come from God the Father and Jesus Christ.
All our blessings come from the grace and peace of God. Peace with God, ourselves, and others in our daily lives comes from God's grace. Christians in America and Europe often use the phrase, “God bless you,” wishing that the grace and peace of God would rest upon whomever they met.
God wants us to strengthen our faith with His grace and peace. The apostle Paul always finished his epistles with a wish that Christians would be strengthened in faith and wisdom by the grace of God(2 Thessalonians 2:17). We cannot strengthen ourselves, but God strengthens us by His grace. Thus, we should first be eager to receive His grace and peace. “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace”(Numbers 6:24- 26).
The five parts of these blessings conveyed hope that God would, first, bless and keep them(favor and protect); second, make his face shine on them(be pleased); third, be precious(merciful and compassionate); fourth, turn his face toward them(give his approval); fifth, give peace. When you ask God to bless others or yourself, you ask him to do these five things. The blessing you offer will not only help the one receiving it, but it will also demonstrate love, encourage others, and provide a model of caring to others.
“Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that the believer would stake his life on it a thousand times. But Satan, the god of all dissension, stirreth up daily new sects, and last of all (which of all other I should never have foreseen or once suspected) he hath raised a sect of such as teach that the Ten Commandments ought to be taken out of the church and that men should not be terrified with the law, but gently exerted by the preaching of the grace of Christ.” – Martin Luther.
Today’s Prayer: Pray that members of your church will lovingly bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill that law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). Pray that all God’s people will be able to stand against the principalities, powers, and the world rulers of darkness that seek to control the lives and destinies of people.

“우리 주 예수 그리스도와 우리를 사랑하시고 영원한 위로와 좋은 소망을 은혜로 주신 하나님 우리 아버지께서 너희 마음을 위로하시고 모든 선한 일과 말에 굳건하게 하시기를 원하노라” - 살후 2:16, 17
우리는 평안과 안녕을 기원하는 마음으로 서로 문안 인사를 나눕니다. 유대인들도 다른 사람들의 평안, 건강, 행복을 기원하는 마음으로 서로 문안 인사를 나누었습니다. 사도 바울은 그의 모든 서신에서 은혜와 평강을 기원하는 문안 인사로 서신을 시작합니다. “하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로 좇아 은혜와 평강이 있기를 원하노라”(고전 1:3).
은혜는 성경에서 가장 아름답고 귀한 단어중 하나입니다. 영어로 은혜의 두문자어는 “그리스도의 값으로 받은 하나님의 부유함”이란 뜻이 있고, 은혜는 하늘의 영원한 부유, 현재와 미래의 좋은 모든 것, 하나님의 과분한 선물을 의미합니다. 하나님의 은혜는 그의 자비에 나타나고 있으며 돌아오는 심판의 기회를 하나님은 연기하고 계십니다. “그러나 주여 주는 긍휼히 여기시며 은혜를 베푸시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인자와 진실이 풍성하신 하나님이시오니”(시 86:15).
은혜는 우리를 향한 하나님의 호의라고 말할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜와 관련된 내용에는 하나님의 사랑, 온유, 인내, 그리고 용서가 있습니다. 은혜는 값없이 주시는 하나님의 사랑 혹은 호의입니다. 바울은 하나님의 은혜와 평강을 개인적으로 경험했기 때문에 그의 은혜를 말하고 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜와 평강은 하나님 아버지와 예수 그리스도로부터 오는 것입니다.
그리고 모든 하나님의 축복은 그의 은혜와 평강에서 옵니다. 하나님과의 평화, 자신과의 평화, 매일의 삶속에서 사람들과의 평화가 하나님의 은혜에서 옵니다. 유럽 사람들은 만날 때마다 하나님의 은혜와 평강을 기원하며 “하나님께서 당신을 축복하십니다”라고 인사를 나눕니다.
하나님은 그의 은혜와 평강으로 우리의 믿음이 굳건해지기를 원하십니다. 바울은 항상 하나님의 은혜로 믿음과 지식이 강건해지기를 원하는 기도로 서신들을 끝냅니다(살후 2:17). 우리는 스스로 믿음에 굳건해지지 못합니다. 하나님께서 은혜를 주셔야 우리가 굳건해 질 수 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 은혜와 평강을 사모해야 합니다. “여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며,여호와는 그의 얼굴로 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라 할지니라 하라”(민 6:25-26).
이 말씀에서 하나님 축복은 첫째, 축복을 주시고 지키시는 것(은혜와 보호), 둘째, 하나님께서 얼굴을 비추시는 것(기뻐하심), 셋째, 하나님은 귀하게 여기시는 것(자비와 사랑), 넷째, 하나님은 얼굴을 우리에게 향하시는 것(인정하심), 다섯째, 하나님은 평강을 주시는 것이라고 말씀합니다. 우리가 다른 사람들을 축복하는 것은 곧 하나님께서 이 다섯 가지 축복을 간구하는 것입니다. 당신의 축복 기도는 받는 사람에게 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라 당신이 그들을 사랑하고 위로하고 있음을 보여주는 것이며 당신이 다른 사람들을 돌보고 있다는 것입니다.
"믿음은 하나님의 은혜에 대한 살아 있고 대담한 확신이며, 신자가 자신의 생명을 천 번 걸고 확신하는 것입니다. 그러나 모든 불화의 신인 사탄은 날마다 새로운 이단을 선동하고, 마지막으로 (내가 결코 예견하거나 의심하지 말았어야 할 다른 모든 것 중에서) 십계명을 교회에서 제거해야 하며 사람들이 율법을 두려워해서는 안 된다고 가르치는 이단을 일으켰습니다. 그러나 그리스도의 은혜를 전파함으로써 부드럽게 영향을 발휘하고 있습니다." – 마틴 루터
오늘의 기도 : 당신의 교회 성도들이 서로의 짐을 사랑으로 나누어지며 그리스도의 법을 성취할 수 있도록 기도하십시오 (갈 6:2). 하나님의 백성들이 통치자들과 권세들과 어두움의 세상 주관 자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 대적할 수 있도록 기도하십시오.
