January 11 - Church and Spiritual Growth
“…until we all reach unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” - Ephesians 4:13
Spiritual growth can only be accomplished after some time. Just as God led the Israelites to conquer the land of Canaan little by little, our spiritual growth is a process. ”The LORD, your God, will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you.”(Deuteronomy 7:22).
Imitating Christ is a gradual and steady progress. There are no shortcuts. The word “attaining” used in Ephesians 4:13, “attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ,” implies a time of process and progress. This process is a life-long journey that has to be undertaken by every Christian throughout their entire life.
Often, we tend to weigh and measure the spiritual maturity of a Christian based on one’s knowledge of the Bible, ability to recite Bible verses, and level of theological learning. Biblical knowledge is the foundation for spiritual growth, but Biblical knowledge alone cannot be the measurement standard. Spiritual growth must be actualized in life, reflecting one’s faith. Being a Christian is not just about confessing the Christian faith or understanding the doctrines; it is a lifestyle that displays Christ-centered action and character. Our action must agree with our confession of faith.
The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes this issue. “In the same way, faith is dead by itself, not accompanied by action. But someone will say, ‘You have faith. I have deeds,’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.”(James 2:17, 18). James teaches us that though one claims to have faith if faith is not evidenced in life, that faith is dead. Paul also stresses the life of a Christian. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the LORD as children of light.”(Ephesians 5:8).
Jesus tells us that we can know a tree by its fruit. (Matthew 7:16). The very element that reveals the maturity of a Christian is not knowledge but the fruit. Unless we carry out what we know, we will only become foolish like a person building a house on sand(Matthew 7:24-27). The Scriptural knowledge without fruit will only produce pride(1 Corinthians 8:1). A spiritually mature person is not proud but always humbly serves the LORD and his neighbors.
Yet, we need to remember that spiritual growth is not an individual task but happens in the context of a community of believers. There must be spiritual fellowship in the maturation process of every Christian’s spirituality. It is impossible to become mature spiritually when one is segregated from other believers. It is in the context of Christian fellowship that we come fully-fledged.

Today’s Prayer: Pray for small group Bible studies as they meet weekly in homes and churches across the continent. Ask God to change hearts and lives through the Word. Pray that many churches worldwide will preach the biblical gospel correctly and that Christian faith communities will grow healthily in obedience to it. First, pray that the church you serve will be transformed by the Word and grow healthy.

“우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한데까지 이르리니” - 엡4:13
그리스도인의 영적성숙은 하룻밤 사이에 이루어지지 않습니다. 이스라엘 백성이 가나안 땅을 조금씩 점령하도록 하나님께서 역사하신 것처럼 우리의 영적성숙도 점진적인 과정을 통해서 이루어지는 것입니다. “네 하나님 여호와께서 이 민족을 네 앞에서 조금씩 쫓아내시리니 너는 그들을 급히 멸하지 말라 들짐승이 번성하여 너희를 해할까 하노라”(신7:22).
예수님을 닮는 갓은 점진적이고 계속되는 발전과정이며 영적성장에 지름길은 없습니다. 에베소서 4:13의 “그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르리니”의 ‘이르리니’는 영적성장과정에는 시간적인 요소가 있다는 것입니다. 영적성숙은 전 생애를 통해서 이루어지며 성도들의 믿음의 여정이라고 말할 수 있습니다.
우리는 종종 그리스도인의 영적성숙을 그리스도인의 성경지식, 성경암송 능력, 또는 신학공부의 수준을 기준으로 평가하고 측정하는 경향이 있습니다. 성경지식이 영적성장의 기초가 되지만, 성경지식이 영적성숙을 측정하는 유일한 기준이 되지는 않습니다. 영적성숙은 그 사람의 믿음과 삶으로 구체화되어 나타나는 것입니다. 그리스도인이 된다는 것은 단순히 믿음을 고백하고 어떤 교리를 안다는 것이 아니라 그리스도 중심의 인격과 행위가 있는 삶의 모습을 가진다는 뜻입니다. 그리스도인의 삶의 행위에는 반드시 우리가 믿는 신앙고백과 일치해야 합니다.
신약성경은 믿음과 행위를 반복 강조하고 있습니다. “이와 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라 어떤 사람은 말하기를 너는 믿음이 있고 나는 행함이 있으니 행함이 없는 네 믿음을 내게 보이라 나는 행함으로 내 믿음을 네 게 보이리라 하리라”(약2:17, 18). 만일 어떤 사람이 믿음이 있다고 주장하면서 그 믿음이 삶으로 구체화되지 않으면 그 믿음은 죽은 것이라고 교훈합니다. 바울도 그리스도인의 삶을 “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라”(엡 5:8)라고 강조하고 있습니다.
예수님은 열매를 보아 그 나무를 안다고 말씀하십니다(마 7:16). 그리스도인의 영적성숙을 나타내는 가장 중요한 요소는 지식이 아니라 열매입니다. 우리가 아는 것을 실천하지 않는 사람은 마치 모래 위에 집을 짓는 어리석은 사람과 같습니다(마 7:24-27). 열매가 없는 성경지식은 우리를 교만하게 만듭니다(고전 8:1). 영적으로 성숙한 사람은 교만하지 않고 항상 겸손하며 하나님을 섬기고 그의 이웃들을 섬기는 삶을 살아가는 것입니다.
기억해야 할 것은 그리스도인의 영적성장은 절대로 개인적인 책임을 다해서 이루어지는 것이 아니라 교회 공동체의 삶을 통해서 이루어진다는 것입니다. 그리스도인들의 성숙은 교회 공동체의 영적교제를 통해서 이루어지며 다른 성도들과의 영적교제가 없는 고립된 생활에는 영적성장이 있을 수 없습니다. 우리는 항상 다른 성도들과의 사랑의 풍성한 교제를 통해서 영적성장과 성숙을 이루어 간다는 사실을 기억해야 합니다.

오늘의 기도 : 모든 대륙에서 가정과 교회에 매주 모여 성경을 공부하는 작은 그룹들과 구역을 위해 기도하고, 말씀을 통해 그들의 마음과 삶이 변화되도록 간구하십시오. 전 세계에 수 많은 교회들이 성경적인 복음을 바르게 전하고, 그 말씀에 순종하여 그리스도인의 신앙공동체가 건강하게 성장하도록 기도하십시오. 먼저 당신이 섬기는 교회가 말씀으로 변화되어 건강한 교회로 계속 성장하도록 기도하십시오.
