July 30 - A Dead Faith and A Living Faith
“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.” – James 2:19
This verse is perhaps the strongest statement in Scripture on the difference between "knowing about" God and "trusting in" God. This is key to the concept of saving faith. The question James asks in verse 14 goes hand-in-hand with his statement here. Knowledge is not the same as trust, obedience, or saving faith. After all, James argues, even demons believe that "God is one" and they shudder in fear of Him.
It's not enough to agree that the thing is true. Real faith in God personally responds to that truth with trust and obedience.The statement that "God is one" may have been a reference to one of the central ideas of Judaism. Known as the Shema, it is found in Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one." Every one of James's Jewish readers would have grown up agreeing with that truth. James's point is that it is not enough to agree.
That puts those who talk about God but fail to act in ways consistent with that belief in the same category as demons. It means knowing but not trusting. It means "dead faith" rather than "saving faith." The danger of this condition is that a self-assured "religious" person can spend their entire lives in simple agreement without ever crossing over into true and living faith.
The Bible explains that action is done through two different mediums: one action is done by fleshly efforts, and the other medium is by the help of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul mentioned, “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealously, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
As I did before, I warn you that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21). Paul contrasted the work of the flesh with the work of the Spirit and wrote, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness” (Galatians. 5:22).
One who has faith lives by the Spirit and produces good fruit. If one claims to have faith but does not have deeds, they cannot produce any fruits (James 2:14). Appropriate deeds must follow a saving faith. James gives us an impressive illustration: “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him,
‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?” (James 2:15-16). One who acts in the Spirit and claims faith should quickly help needy people.
The one who has no deeds does not carry true spiritual power. Even demons have that kind of faith (James 2:19). Faith that merely believes in the existence of God cannot save anyone. God requires us to practice good deeds with our faith. That is why James said, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26). Neither intellectual faith nor fleshly deeds are sufficient for salvation.
But, by the power of the Holy Spirit, a faith with deeds can change one’s dead faith into a living one. Christ quoted the Old Testament and said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Matthew 15:8). We must not live in the flesh but in the Spirit. We must deny ourselves, take up the cross, and follow Christ (Mark 8:34). Only when we have faith that is alive can we achieve the commands of Christ.

“네가 하나님은 한 분이신 줄을 믿느냐 잘 하는 도다 귀신들도 믿고 떠느니라” - 약 2:19
이 구절은 하나님에 대해 "아는 것"과 하나님을 "신뢰하는"것의 차이에 관한 가장 강력한 성경 말씀입니다. 구원받는 믿음의 핵심 개념은 야고보가 2:14에서 던지는 질문과 2:19의 말씀과 깊은 연관이 있습니다. 하나님에 대한 지식은 하나님을 신뢰하고 순종하는 것, 또는 구원받는 믿음과 일치하지 않습니다. 야고보는 귀신 조차도 "하나님은 한 분이시다"라고 믿으며 두려워 떨고 있다고 말합니다. 믿음은 어떤 사실에 동의하는 자세가 아닙니다. 진정한 믿음은 개인적으로 하나님의 말씀의 진리에 반응하며 하나님을 신뢰하고 순종하는 것입니다.
"하나님은 유일하신 한 분” 이라는 사상은 유대교의 중심사상 중 하나입니다. 히브리어 쉐마로 시작하는 신명기 6장 4절에 "이스라엘아 들으라 우리 하나님 여호와는 오직 유일한 여호와이시니"라고 말씀합니다. 야고보서를 읽는 유대인들은 이 쉐마의 진리에 동의하며 교육을 받고 성장하였습니다. 야고보는 단지 하나님의 말씀에 동의하는 것으로 충분하지 않으며 말씀을 믿는 것과 일치하는 행위가 없으면 귀신의 믿음과 같은 범주에 들어간다고 말합니다.
하나님에 관한 지식은 있으나 하나님을 신뢰하지 않는 것이고 구원받는 믿음이 아니라 죽은 믿음이라는 것입니다. 죽은 믿음은 참되고 살아있는 믿음으로 변화하지 않고도 단순한 동의로만 자신감 넘치는 종교적인 사람으로 평생을 사는 위험성이 있다는 것입니다.
인간의 행함에는 두개의 범주가 있다고 성경은 가르치고 있습니다. 육신적인 노력에 의한 행함과 성령의 도우심으로 이루어지는 행함입니다. 사도 바울은 “육체의 일은 현저하니 곧 음행과 더러운 것과 호색과 우상 숭배와 술수와 원수를 맺는 것과 분쟁과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것과 분리함과 이단과 투기와 술 취함과 방탕함과 또 그의 같은 것들이라 전에 너희에게 경계한 것 같이 경계하노니 이런 일을 하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못할 것이요”(갈 5:19-21)라고 말합니다.
바울은 육체의 일과 성령의 일을 대조하여, “오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제니 이 같은 것을 금지할 법이 없느니라”(갈 5:22-23)고 말합니다.
믿음의 사람은 성령으로 살며 선한 열매를 맺습니다. 믿음이 있노라 하고 아무런 행함이 없으면 아무 열매도 맺지 못합니다(약 2:14). 구원받는 믿음에는 반드시 합당한 행함이 따르게 되어 있습니다. 야고보는 이에 대한 감동적인 예를 들고 있습니다. “만일 형제나 자매가 헐벗고 일용할 양식이 없는데 너희 중에 누구든지 그에게 이르되 평안히 가라, 더웁게 하라, 배부르게 하라 하며 그 몸에 쓸 것을 주지 아니하면 무슨 이익이 있으리요”(약 2:15-16). 믿음을 가지고 성령으로 행하는 사람은 궁핍한 자들을 속히 돌보는 것입니다.
행함이 없는 믿음에는 영적 능력이 나타나지 않습니다. 귀신도 이러한 믿음을 가지고 있습니다 (약 2:19). 단순히 하나님의 존재를 믿는 믿음으로는 구원받지 못합니다. 하나님이 원하시는 믿음은 행함의 믿음입니다. 야고보가 “영혼이 없는 몸이 죽은 것 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이니라”(약 2:26) 라고 말한 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 지적인 믿음을 소유한 자나 육신으로만 행하는 자는 온전한 구원을 받지 못합니다. 그러나 성령의 능력으로 행함이 없는 죽은 믿음도 산 믿음으로 변화받을 수 있습니다.
구약에서 주님은 “백성이 입술로는 나를 존경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다”(마 15:8)라고 말합니다. 육신에 따라 살지 않고 성령의 인도함을 받아 살아가야 합니다. 자기를 부인하고 십자가를 지고 예수님을 따라가야 합니다(막 8:34). 오직 살아있는 믿음을 가질 때에만 그리스도의 명령을 이해하고 성취할 수 있습니다.
