August 10 - Humility and Gentleness
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:29-30
The only way to live a Christian life is to rely on the LORD, cling to Him by faith, admit our helplessness, and trust His strength. And so He calls us to: "Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me." The LORD Jesus was meek and lowly in heart, and we are to learn of Him. His entire life was spent living the life of a man who trusted God entirely, and He did only those things that He heard from the Father. In like manner, when we take His yoke upon us and learn to live in continuous dependence upon Him, we too shall find rest for our souls, for His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
In Ephesians chapter 4, apostle Paul admonishes us to “live a life worthy of the calling you have received” (Ephesians 4:1).
The meaning of living a life worthy of the calling we have received has the original concept of balance. It means we exert ourselves to live a life worthy of the abundant blessings we have received. For people to be a person who lives a life worthy of their calling, they must be humble and gentle. Humility was one characteristic of enslaved people in the Roman and Greek times; enslaved people respected and worshipped the people who were arrogant and proud.
Repentance and humility are always found together. Since born again Christians are a part of the Kingdom of God, they must pursue humility (Colossians 2:8-12). Also, gentleness always accompanies humility. Gentleness does not mean weakness. A gentle person is humble concerning others for the sake of Christ to be glorified. Gentleness is the desire to be the last person to obey God. Becoming the least means having much self-control. In ancient times, tamed horses were used during the war, and these horses were called gentle horses. They were strong horses, but since they were obedient and followed instructions, they were called gentle horses.
Jesus is applying gentleness in two ways. First, he used gentleness to forgive, not retaliate with his power. Second, he used his power to protect others and guard the Truth. Pride and arrogance become the seed for division. But humble and gentle people regard others higher than themselves, make peace with others, and become one in the heart (Proverbs 13:10).

Today’s Prayer: Praise God, the giver of good gifts (Matthew 7:11). Thank him for the greatest gift of all: his Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior (Luke 22:19). Confess any lack of thankfulness for all of God’s gifts to you. Commit yourself to giving the gospel your time, talents, and resources. Ask God to grant you a heart of generosity (Luke 6:38).

8월 10일 - 겸손과 온유
“나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 나의 멍에를 메고 내게 배우라 그러면 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리니 이는 내 멍에는 쉽고 내짐은 가벼움이라.” - 마 11:29-30
그리스도인의 삶이란 우리의 연약함을 깨닫고 하나님의 능력과 힘을 믿음으로 의지하고 살아가는 삶입니다. 주님은 우리에게 "나의 멍에를 메고 내게 배우라"고 우리를 초청합니다. 우리 주 예수님의 마음은 온유하고 겸손하시기 때문에 우리는 반드시 예수님으로부터 배워야 합니다. 예수님은 지상에서 공생애의 삶을 사시는 동안 하나님을 온전히 의지하고 하나님의 말씀에 따라 순종하는 삶을 사셨습니다. 우리도 예수님의 말씀에 따라 그의 멍에를 메고 믿음으로 하나님을 의지하며 살아갈 때에 영혼의 안식을 얻으며 예수님의 멍에는 쉽고 그의 짐은 가볍기 때문에 우리는 예수님의 멍에와 짐을 지고 배우는 것입니다.
사도 바울은 에베소서 4장에서 “너희가 부르심을 입은 부름에 합당하게 행하여(엡4:1)"라고 그리스도인들에게 권면합니다. 부르심을 입은 부름에 합당하게 행한다는 것은 본래 균형있는 삶을 살아간다는 뜻입니다. 우리가 하나님으로 받은 축복에 따라 풍성한 삶을 살도록 힘쓰라는 말씀입니다. 우리가 부르심에 합당한 삶을 살기 위해서는 먼저 겸손하고 온유해야 합니다. 고대 그리스와 로마 시대 당시 겸손은 노예들의 삶의 특징으로 보았고 사람들은 자기를 과시하고 자신만만하게 살아가는 사람들을 존경하고 숭배했습니다.
회개와 겸손은 그리스도인의 삶에 항상 같이 나타납니다. 하나님의 나라에 속한 거듭난 그리스도인들은 항상 겸손합니다(골 2:8-12). 또한 온유에는 항상 겸손이 함께 따릅니다. 온유는 약함을 뜻하지 않습니다. 온유한 자는 힘과 능력의 주님을 알고 그리스도 때문에 다른 사람들에게 순복하는 자입니다. 온유는 하나님께 순종하는 겸손한 자세이며 겸손한 자가 된다는 것은 힘을 절제할 줄 아는 사람이 된다는 뜻입니다. 고대에는 전쟁에서 사용하는 말은 모두 잘 길들여져 있었는데 이러한 말들을 가리켜 온유한 말이라고 불렀습니다. 말들이 힘이 있지만 주인의 말에 잘 순복하고 따르기 때문에 온유한 말이라고 불렀습니다. .
예수님은 온유를 두 가지로 설명합니다. 첫째, 온유를 보복하는 것이 아니라 용서하는 것입니다. 둘째, 온유는 다른 사람을 보호하고 진리를 수호하는 것입니다. 교만함과 자기를 높이는 거만함은 분리와 나눔의 원인이 됩니다. 그러나 온유하고 겸손한 자들은 다른 사람들을 높이고 그들과 화평하기 때문에 모두 한 마음을 가지게 합니다(잠 13:10).
