August 16 - Christ’s Reign and New People

“For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” - 1 Corinthians. 15:25-26

Paul provides thorough teaching about the resurrection of Christians from the dead. This is a direct counter to some group of Corinthians who did not believe in such a resurrection. He shows that natural death is not the end of life for Christians; it is the last step before receiving a glorified, resurrected body like the risen Christ. That ''spiritual'' body will be as different from our current bodies as a star is from a fish. In that moment, for all who have believed in Christ, living and dead, death will be defeated for good.

Paul is sketching out, with very little detail, the events that will be set in motion during what Christians often call the "end times." First, when Christ returns, all who belong to Him will be physically resurrected from the dead, which is Paul's larger point in this passage. After that incredible moment, Paul added that Jesus would dethrone every rulership, power, and authority on earth to take full control of the world as His kingdom, which He would immediately hand over to the Father. Paul emphasizes that Jesus will not hand it over to the Father until He has "put all of his enemies under his feet" or defeated them absolutely and irrevocably. Until that moment, Christ Himself will reign. The separate roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the Trinity are difficult to comprehend. All are one as God, yet they maintain separate enough identities that Christ the Son will reign until He delivers what He has conquered to the Father.

God created human beings in his likeness so that man may rule over the earth and minister to God’s creation in God’s place, reflecting His character (Gen 1:26). The mission given to man in this world is this: As the glory and honor of God are revealed in the universe, we ought to reveal His glory and honor to the world. Then how are we to respond to this glorious call?

First, we must understand through the revelation that we are special beings. The value and magnitude of our being can only be understood through our relationship with God. It can only be understood through the special revelation, not the general revelation.

Secondly, we must understand one of the creation ordinances: Man is made to be lower than God. The first fault Adam was that he did not know his standing; he did not know who he was. He thought he could be like a god when Satan tempted him. We are like Satan when we think that we can be god. Because of this sin, we no longer rule over the creation; rather, we are ruled by the creation because we have lost our position to rule through sin. However, as new creations through the redemption of Jesus Christ, we are being commissioned with the original mission God first gave to human beings. The second Adam, Jesus Christ, won over sin, Satan, and death (1 Corinthians 15:25-26).

The author of the book of Hebrews says, “But there is a place where someone has testified: ‘What is the man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet…so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone” (Hebrews 2:6-9). In other words, we are a little lower than the angels for a while, but all the redeemed of the LORD will be blessed with the crown of glory and honor along with the LORD because of His sacrifice.

Today’s Prayer: Pray that people worldwide will lift their eyes to God (Psalm 145:13-15). Ask God to show his greatness by continuing to provide for all his creatures (Psalm 145:16).

Prayer Pointer: Prayer allows a man to get to know a gentleman he hardly ever meets. I do not mean his maker, but himself. – William Inge
