August 18 - Separation from the Life of God

“They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” Ephesians 4:18

Ephesians 4:17-32 is a valuable, highly practical explanation of how to live out a Christian life. Paul notes the difference between a life wallowing under the power of sin and a life thriving in the power of Christ. Christians are called on to ''put away'' the things that entangle unbelievers. This includes sins such as malice, slander, commotion, and bitterness. Instead, we should demonstrate a Christ-like attitude of love and forgiveness.

Paul uses the concept of Gentiles in this passage as a reference to those apart from God's family. In other words, in this instance, Paul is referring to unbelievers. Such people are given two characteristics in this verse.

First, their ability to understand what is right is blocked by the "light" of God. Believers, on the other hand, are to love the LORD with "all the understanding" (Mark 12:33). Paul notes elsewhere that false teachers lack understanding (1 Timothy 1:7); it is the LORD who gives understanding (2 Timothy 2:7; James 3:13). Second, unbelievers are separated from God, and the life He gives in salvation. An unbeliever cannot experience God apart from salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8).

Paul also provides two reasons explaining why these characteristics are true. First is not knowing or understanding God's ways. As the second point demonstrates, this "ignorance" has nothing to do with intelligence. The following detail is that unbelief is not fundamentally mental but moral. Unbelievers live with hearts hardened against God, so they cannot understand what God tries to teach them (John 7:17; 1 Corinthians 2:14).

The Bible teaches us that our minds have to be renewed. A person’s heart becomes hardened when the person leaves God (Ephesians 4:18).

Jesus said that hardened hearts are stubborn hearts (Mark 3:5-6). Hardened hearts express the inability and unwillingness to respond to the truth of God. A heart that left God is darkened. Once a heart is hardened, the heart gets dark. Paul said, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22). The more a person resists, the more he gets dulled and darkened spiritually.

There will be spiritual death when a person leaves God. Death comes by hardening hearts and becoming darkened in hearts. When a person is separated from the life of God, he calls evil good and good evil; also, one puts darkness for light, and light for darkness (Isaiah 5:20).

And there will be dissipation. “Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more” (Ephesians. 4:19). Because a person losing all sensitivity does not know the pain, he is dissipated and content with every kind of impurity. This is the generation indulging in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more, which is the society where we live. Surely, we must come to God.

We need to hear the Gospel every day because we forget it every day.” – Martin Luther.
