August 20 - Humility and Pride

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”  Hebrew 4:16

In Hebrews chapter 4, the author refines the theme of chapter 3. An entire generation of Israel lost their

inheritance of the Promised Land due to a lack of faith. Here, the author points out that the rest promised by God is still offered through Christ. The razor-sharp truth of the Word of God will separate what is truly spiritual from what is faithless. We should try to obtain our inheritance in Christ, separate from our eternal salvation. We can also be confident, knowing Jesus can uniquely sympathize with our temptations and sufferings.

Hebrews 4:14-16 is among the most often quoted passages in the Bible. It is also one of the clearest expressions of Christianity's unique nature. Jesus, the Son of God, has experienced our struggles, temptations, and sufferings. And yet, He did so without succumbing to sin. For this reason, we can look to Him as our perfect example. We can rely on Him as our perfect substitute. We can come to Him as our only High Priest. And we can trust in Him as our source of help and healing.

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Being prideful means putting oneself higher than others.

God opposes the proud for three reasons. First, a proud person does not realize they are a mere human. Second, prideful person values their independence more than God. Third, a prideful person does not see and recognize their sin.

But, for a humble person, God promises to give grace. Jesus said to the apostle Paul, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). He is gracious toward those who depend on Him and follow Him (Hebrews 4:16).

We should resist and defeat the devil, who encourages us to be prideful. To do so, we should first wash our hands. “Wash your hands, you sinners” (James 4:8). Our actions and deeds should be pure. The Bible instructs the threefold purity to us: lips (Isaiah 6:5, 6), hands (Psalms 24:4), and heart (Psalms 73:13). Second, we should purify our hearts.

“Purity your hearts, you double- minded” (James 4:8). We should be blameless in God’s eyes. Third, we must grieve and mourn before God: “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom” (James 4:9). Mourning is the evidence of repentance. We must confess all our sins with tears. The verse above commands us to be in constant penance.

We should stop compromising with the devil and repent for every sin committed. We can never please God if we are friends with the devil; we must proclaim war and resist the devil. Then, the devil will flee from us. And victory only comes through Jesus Christ and the Spirit. With our human efforts, we cannot defeat the devil (Eph. 6:16). Satan is strong and mighty but not perfect.  “Resist the devil, then he’ll flee from you” (James 4:7).

Humility is to make a right estimate of one's self.” - Charles Spurgeon.

Today’s Prayer: Pray that God will raise religious and political leaders who understand God’s desire for the right relationship with him rather than mere lip service or token gestures (Psalm 51:16-17). Ask God to lead his kingdom into true repentance and revival.
