September 5 - A Pilgrim’s Reverence
“Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.” - 1 Peter 1:17
Verse 17 combines quite a few varied ideas. First, Peter reminds us that our relationship with God-by His grace and our faith in Christ-is between a child and a Father. It's a relationship of open communication. He has called us (1 Peter 1:15), and we call on Him.This is a Father who has proven His love for us (Romans 5:8) and right now actively shields us and the inheritance He has promised us in heaven (1 Peter 1:6). He is a good Father. We are saved; we are secure. But He judges our conduct impartially and individually. This has to be carefully understood. This is not a judgment about whether or not God will allow us into heaven or punish us with His wrath. Peter clearly states in this letter that the decision was made and done. Our Father has given His believing children credit for Jesus' perfectly righteous life and has allowed His Son's death to pay the price for our sins.But our Father does judge. He judges our works.
He pays attention to whether our actions are those of "holy people" set apart for His purposes (1 Peter 1:15) or whether our choices continue to be driven by the "evil desires" we had when we lived in ignorance (1 Peter 1:14; 1 Corinthians 3:10-15). Knowing this should change the way we live. We should embrace our status as foreigners, strangers, and people in exile. We should live like the Father we wait to be united with. We should live with some amount of healthy fear.
Our true citizenship does not belong to any country but to heaven. We are the citizens of heaven who live as travelers in this world. But we should remember that God judges us according to our works. Peter said to those who live with lust and evil desires, “But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5). The Apostle Paul said, “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). We should remember that we may be saved, but may not receive rewards. We should fear rewards. Missing a reward is like losing the gold medal in the Olympics. Our race of religion and faith is to receive a reward and prize.
Therefore, we should fear God in this world. Fearing God makes us revere and obey Him. To receive the prize, we should discipline ourselves and be thoughtful and cautious in our deeds. So, fearing God does not mean being afraid of Him but having proper reverence for Him. Christians in the early church had a deep reverence for God. We, too, like them, should have a deep reverence for God; we should remember who God is and who we are as pilgrims in this world.
Apostle Paul said, “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed not only in my presence but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). He said we could continue to work out our salvation with His strength and power. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13). The Bible taught us that we cannot work out our salvation with our efforts or strength. Only when God is with us is our salvation complete.

“외모로 보시지 않고 각 사람의 행위대로 판단하시는 자를 너희가 아버지라 부른 즉 너희의 나그네로 있을 때를 두려움으로 지내라” - 벧전 1:17
위의 말씀은 그리스도인들에게 다양한 메시지를 전해 주고 있습니다. 먼저, 하나님의 은혜와 그리스도를 믿는 우리의 믿음을 통해서 우리가 하나님의 자녀임을 가르치고 있습니다. 하나님과 우리는 열려져 있는 서로 교통하는 관계에 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 부르셨고(벧전 1:15) 우리와 교통하고 계시며 그의 사랑을 우리에게 보여 주셨습니다(롬 5:8). 하나님은 지금도 약속하신 하늘의 기업을 우리를 위해 보호하고 계시는 좋으신 아버지이십니다(벧전 1:6). 우리의 구원은 확실하지만 하나님은 우리의 행위를 편파없이 행위대로 판단 하십니다.
하나님께서 우리를 행위대로 판단하신다는 말씀을 신중히 받아들여야 합니다. 이것은 천국에 들어가느냐 또는 진노의 심판을 받느냐의 판단이 아닙니다. 이미 사도 베드로는 이 서신에서 하나님 아버지께서는 믿는 자녀들을 위해 그의 아들 예수님으로 죄의 댓가를 치르게 하셨고 완전한 의의 삶을 주신다는 판단의 결정을 하셨다고 말합니다.
그러나 하나님 아버지는 우리 각자를 행위대로 심판하십니다. 우리의 행위가 하나님의 목적을 위한 구별된 "거룩한 자"의 행위인지(벧전 1:15), 아니면 무지의 삶 가운데 우리가 선택한 "사욕"에 의한 행위인지(벧전 1:14; 고전 3:10-15) 하나님은 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 그러므로 그리스도인들은 이 세상에서 살아가는 법을 배워야 하고 우리는 나그네의 신분으로 살아가고 있음을 알아야 합니다. 우리는 하나님과 함께 하는 그날을 기다리며 세상에 사는 동안 나그네의 경건한 두려움을 가지고 살아가야 합니다.
우리의 시민권은 세상에 있지 않고 하늘 나라에 있습니다. 우리는 세상에서 나그네로 살아가는 천국 시민입니다. 그러나 우리가 이 세상에 살아가지만 하나님은 행위에 따라 심판하신다는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 베드로는 정욕과 악한 욕망을 품고 사는 자들에게는 "그러나 그들은 산 자와 죽은 자를 심판할 준비가 된 자에게 답변해야 하리라" (벧전 4:5)고 말하고 있고, 바울은 "그러므로 우리 각 사람이 자기를 하나님께 고하리라" (롬 14:12)고 말합니다. 우리가 구원은 받아도 상급을 받지 못할 수도 있음을 알고 두려워 해야 합니다. 올림픽에서 금메달을 따는 것과 같이 이 세상에서의 믿음의 경주에도 우리를 위한 상급이 준비되어 있습니다.
그러므로, 이 세상을 살아가면서 하나님을 경외해야 합니다. 하나님을 경외하는 자는 하나님께 순종하고 상급을 얻기 위해 훈련을 받아가며 사려깊은 신중한 행동을 해야 합니다. 하나님을 두려워 한다는 것은 하나님을 경외한다는 것입니다. 초대교회의 성도들은 하나님을 경외하며 믿음을 지켰습니다. 우리는 초대교회 성도들처럼 하나님이 누구이며, 이 세상에서 나그네인 우리 자신들은 누구인지 기억하고 하나님을 두려워하고 경외하는 삶을 살아야 합니다.
사도 바울은 “그러므로 나의 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 나 있을 때뿐 아니라 더욱 지금 나 없을 때에도 항상 복종하여 두렵고 떨림으로 너희 구원을 이루라”(빌 2:12) 고 말합니다. 그리고 하나님이 주시는 힘과 능력으로 온전한 구원을 이루어 나가라고 권합니다. “너희 안에 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희로 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니” (빌 2:13). 성경은 우리 자신의 노력이나 힘으로 구원을 받을 수 없고 하나님께서 우리와 함께하실 때 우리의 구원을 이루어 나간다고 가르치고 있습니다.
