October 6 - Son of Man and Salvation

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”  Luke 19:10

As a rich, important, and chief tax collector, Zacchaeus was an individual the Jews hated and despised by the Romans. He was possibly a man who had been a swindler or a thief. But Jesus took time to come to him, to call to him, and to open up the path of salvation for him, for Jesus had come to seek and to save that which was lost. No doubt God had been preparing the heart of this wealthy yet detested tax collector, for God can discern the motives of every man, and this meeting with Christ brought a sinner to repentance when confronted with the incomparable perfection of the Son of Man.

Unlike the arrogant Pharisees, the tax collectors and sinners thanked God that they were so different from such 'offensive' people. These self-righteous men were so proud that they fasted twice weekly and paid their cumin and dill tithes. They were unswervingly righteous in their own unenlightened and petty little eyes, yet failed to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before God.

How different the LORD Jesus was from those critical Jewish leaders who so readily accused the LORD Jesus of mingling with tax collectors and sinners! But that day, salvation came to the house of Zacchaeus for the Son of Man to seek and save what was lost. God still knows man's heart and is still seeking and saving those lost and bringing salvation to many souls who trust in HIM by grace through faith. The heart of the Bible's message is about God’s redemptive history through the death of Jesus Christ for the salvation of human beings. The New Testament explains the meaning of ‘salvation’ in various ways.

First, salvation is healing from sickness caused by the devil's work. Jesus called his healing ministry ‘salvation’: “She said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed’” (Matthew 9:21).

“Those who had seen it told the people how the demon possessed man had been cured” (Luke 8:36). Second, salvation is a deliverance from a critical condition and an emergent situation. “The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘LORD, save us!' We’re going to drown!” (Matthew 8:25).

“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, ‘LORD, save me!’” (Matthew 14:30). Third, salvation is a deliverance from the corrupt generation. “With many other words, he warned them; and pleaded with them, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation’” (Acts 2:40). Fourth, salvation is a deliverance of the lost soul away from God (Luke 19:10). Fifth, salvation is a deliverance from sins by receiving forgiveness. “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins’” (Matthew 1:21).

Sixth, salvation is deliverance from God’s wrath and judgment. “Since his blood has now justified us, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!” (Romans 5:9)

Lastly, salvation is an eschatological deliverance in the last days. “And do this, understanding the present time. The hour had come for you to wake up from your slumber because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11). “The LORD will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18). Therefore, salvation is in Christ, through God’s grace, and received only by faith. “And they cried out loudly: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb’” (Revelation 7:10).

Today’s Prayer: Ask God to teach Christians to ask not “how little” but rather “how much” when they make decisions about giving finances. Pray that Christ’s great gift of himself will lead Christians to give liberally.

Prayer Pointer: The first thing that Jesus taught His disciples about prayer was that it involved relationships.  - Margaret Magdalen
