July 24 -  Multiplied Prayer Power

“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night and day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” – Esther 4:15-16

The Book is a beautiful story about a young heroine whose brave actions illustrate a living message for believers today. We pick up the story when Esther has been queen for about five years. Her cousin Mordecai learns of a plot to annihilate all the Jews in the land. The mastermind behind the murderous scheme is Haman, the king’s second-in-command. Mordecai unites with all the Jews in mourning, fasting, and prayer. At the same time, he pleads for help to Esther, asking her “to go to the king’s presence to beg for mercy and plead with for her people” (Esther 4:8). 

Esther responds by messenger, explaining her predicament (Esther 4:11). Mordecai answers, reminding Esther that, as a Jew, her life is in danger if Haman’s plot succeeds. Then Mordecai delivers these famous words: “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).At this revelation, Esther’s fear turns to faith, and she accepts her divine purpose: “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me,” she tells Mordecai. “Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My attendants and I will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:15–16). 

On the third day, “Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance” (Esther 5:1). The king receives Esther, and the prayers of God’s people are answered. Esther lives, the evil plot is overthrown, Mordecai is honored, Haman hangs on the gallows, the Jewish people are saved, and the Jews establish the Feast of Purim to commemorate God’s great deliverance forever. 

Esther realized the importance of bringing together the power of corporate prayer in one mind. Jesus said, “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.”(Matthew 18:19). Some years ago, a group of Brazilian pastors saw God’s power firsthand when they met to pray for their nation. Guided by the Holy Spirit, they prayed boldly for more individuals to be committed to prayer and for spreading the Gospel in Brazil. One of those pastors mobilized nearly one million Christians to pray for Brazil for 31 days. Since that opportune prayer meeting, millions of people in Brazil have received Christ.

Corporate prayer also benefits those who are praying. Esther undoubtedly was given comfort, courage, and strategy for winning the king’s favor. We, too, will find instruction, correction, inspiration, and direction. The Holy Spirit guides our prayers and energizes them with His awesome power. Identify a prayer need. Ask two or three others to join you in prayer, either in the presence of one another or independently at an appointed time. Continue to pray until the situation is resolved.

Today’s Prayer: Pray that those involved in outreach from your congregation will be empowered to offer “the bread of God… who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33).

“에스더가 명하여 모르드개에게 화답하되 당신은 가서 수산에 잇는 유다인을 다 모으고 나를 위하여 금식하되 밤낮 삼일을 먹지도 말고 마시지도 마소서 나도 나의 시녀로 더불어 이렇게 금식한 후에 규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다” – 스 4:15-16

에스더서는 젊은 여성의 용감한 믿음의 관한 이야기로 오늘날에도 여전히 믿는 자들에게 살아있는 메시지를 주고 있습니다. 에스더가 약 5 년간 왕후로 있었을 때에 그녀의 삼촌 모르드개는 그 나라에 살고 있는 모든 유대인을 멸절하려는 음모를 알게 됩니다. 이 유대인 살인 음모 계획의 배후는 왕의 총사령관인 하만이 있었습니다. 모르드개는 모든 유대인들과 연합하여 애통히며 금식과 기도를 하게 됩니다. 동시에 모르드개는 에스더에게 도움을 청하며 "왕에게 나아가서 그 앞에서 자기 민족을 위하여 간절히 구하라"(에 4:8)고 간청합니다. 

에스더는 그의 메신저를 통해 자기의 곤경을 왕에게 알립니다(에 4:11). 모르드개는 에스더에게 하만의 음모가 성공하면 유대인 모두의 생명이 위험하다는 것을 상기시킵니다. "이 때에 네가 만일 네가 잠잠하여  말이  없으면 유다인은 다른 데로 말미암아 놓임과 구원을 얻으려니와 너와 네 아버지의 집은 멸망하리라 네가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이 이때를 위함이 아닌지 누가 알겠느냐 하니” (에 4:14)

에스더는 이 음로를 알고 두려워하지 않고 믿음을로 하나님의 뜻이 있음을 깨닫고 모르드개에게  "당신은 가서 수산에 있는 유다인을 다 모으고 나를 위하여 금식하되 밤낮 삼일을 먹지도 말고 마시지도 마소서 나도 나의 시녀와 더불어 이렇게 금식한 후에 규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다 하니라”(스 4:15-16) 고 말합니다. 

셋째 날, "에스더는 왕후의 예복을 입고 왕궁 안뜰 곧 어전 맞은 편에 서니 왕이 어전에서 전 문을 대하여 왕좌에 앉았더라”(스 5:1)고 기록되고 있습니다. 왕은 에스더를 영접하여 받아 들이게 되고 하나님의 백성인 유다인의 합심 기도가 응답됩니다. 그러므로 하만의 악한 음도는 파괴되었고 에스더와 모르드개는 존대를 받았습니다. 그러나 하만은 교수대에 달리고, 유대 민족은 구원을 받아, 하나님의 위대한 구원을 영원히 기념하기 위해 제정합니다.  

에스더는 합심 기도의 능력과 중요성을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 예수님도 "진실로 다시 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중에 두 사람이 땅에서 합심하여 무엇이든지 구하면 하늘에 계신 내 아버지께서 그들을 위하여 이루게 하시리라”(마 18:19)고 말씀합니다. 수년 전, 브라질의 한 목회자 그룹이 나라의 복음화를 위해 합심 기도하기 시작하였을 때 성령의 역사로 더 많은 사람들이 기도에 헌신하고 브라질의 복음화를 위해 담대하게 기도하였습니다. 그 목사 중 한 명은 나중에 31일 동안 브라질을 위해 기도하기 위해 거의 백만 명의 기독교인을 동원했습니다. 이러한 적절한 기도모임 이후로, 브라질의 수백만의 사람들이 그리스도인들이 되었습니다.

합심 기도는 기도하는 사람 자신에게 유익합니다. 에스더는 분명히 왕의 총애를 받기 위한 격려와 용기와 전략을 얻었습니다. 우리도 합심기도를 통해 교훈, 변화, 영감, 인도함을 얻습니다. 성령께서는 우리의 기도를 인도하실 뿐만 아니라 그의 놀라운 능력으로 기도에 활력을 주십니다. 기도의 필요 사항을 파악하고. 두세 명의 다른 사람들에게 서로 함께 또는 지정된 시간에 독립적으로 함께 기도하자고 요청하십시오 상황이 해결 될 때까지 계속 기도하십시오.

“두 세 사람이 내 이름으로 모인 곳에는 나도 그들 중에 있느니라” – 마 18:20

오늘의 기도: 당신의 교회에서 이웃 전도 사역에 참여한 자들이 “하늘에서 내려 세상에 생명을 주시는” 하나님의 생명의 떡을 제공하는 능력을 힘 입을 수 있도록 기도하십시오.
