October 20 - Make Music in your Heart to the God

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the LORD.” – Ephesians 5:19

In verse 18, Paul taught believers to be controlled by the Spirit. How does this look? This verse offers three expressions. First, Paul mentions "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs." This could include reading Scripture passages aloud, spoken poetry, or singing music in a small or larger group of believers.

Three types of songs are mentioned. Psalms refer to the Old Testament songs Jews sing and share among Christians. Hymns were likely more traditional songs meant to instruct, similar to the one quoted by Paul in verse 14. Spiritual songs may refer to more spontaneous, call-and-response music. These would be equivalent to "contemporary" music, following cultural styles yet focused on God-honoring lyrics. Paul notes all styles of music can be used to honor God as long as God is the focus.Singing is only occasionally mentioned in the New Testament, but it does play an important role in the early church. Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison (Acts 16:25). Paul wrote about singing to the Roman believers (Romans 15:9), to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 14:15), and to the Colossians (Colossian 3:16). James commanded believers to sing praise to God (James 5:13). Revelation notes expressions of singing (14:3; 15:3–4). Finally, Paul adds, "making melody to the LORD with your heart." Believers can sing with their voices and live with a "song" internally. God instills joy within those controlled by the Spirit.

What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? And how are we going to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit? Concerning these questions, Christians need help understanding. Paul said that life in the fullness of the Holy Spirit is to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and to sing and make music in our hearts to the LORD (Ephesians 5:19)

This verse does not mean singing hymns like an opera. As our hearts dwell in the richness of God’s word with the Holy Spirit, we can sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16). When we have cheerful hearts, psalms and hymns of joy will come into our hearts naturally. When people gather together at the church with the praise songs of their hearts, the church will communicate praise songs with God horizontally and perpendicularly.

There will always be a praise song whenever there is a spiritual blessing. When the Reformation came,,many hymn songs were written and composed, and a movement of singing hymns began. When Wesley’s revival era came, Charles Wesley wrote the lyrics to more than 6,000 hymns. Moreover, during Moody's and spiritual revival movements, Ira Sankey wrote many lyrics of gospel songs.

Additionally, there is an overflow of thankfulness in a life full of the Holy Spirit. Paul said, “…always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20). Thanking God for everything means being grateful no matter how bad the situation. Some people say our unconditional praise of God is the secret to victory over spiritual battles. Despite the worst situation in our lives, God will always be with us. We should praise God, who brings goodness by working everything together for good.
