December 19 - I have overcome the World.

 

“I have told you these things so you may have peace in me. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

 

 

Christ's words, recorded here, are among the most cherished in the gospel of John. This statement combines teaching, remembrance, warning, and encouragement. Becoming a Christian does not guarantee an easy life. Jesus has clarified that following Him can lead to persecution (John 16:1–4). The joy born-again believers hold comes from knowing that Christ has already obtained the ultimate victory, and nothing in this world can undo that (Romans 8:38–39). Christ made it clear, in advance, that hard times will come (John 15:20–21) and should reassure believers these situations do not take God by surprise.

Several times during the Last Supper, Jesus has pointed out that He is deliberately giving a warning (John 13:19; 14:25; 16:4). His explicit purpose for this is encouragement; rather than reacting in fear or confusion, Christians should be aware that those experiences are part of God's greater plan. The book of Hebrews, especially chapter 11, celebrates heroes of the faith who chose to "hold fast" and trust in God. That trust, Scripture shows, was well-placed, even if fulfillment of God's promises didn't come until after those believers had passed into eternity.

The "peace" Jesus speaks of is not worldly comfort or happiness. This is the confident "rest" (Matthew 11:28–30) believers experience when they set aside anxiety (Matthew 6:25–34) and trust God to work out His will. Christians earn practical benefits through trials and hardships. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). There are many kinds of suffering, but overall, Christians face three kinds of suffering. 

 

First of all, there is suffering from a cause and result. This suffering is the biblical principle that whatever a man sows, he will reap (Galatians 6:7). Many hardships and trials come from disobedience to God’s word. Our greed causes trouble in our lives. 

 

Second, there is spiritual suffering for Christians. Peter advised that we not be surprised when we face this kind of suffering (1 Peter 4:12-13). We Christians sometimes suffer because we want to live a godly life. We belong to the ‘Kingdom of God,’ the world's light. Therefore, people who live in darkness hate us (John 1:1-13). 

 

Third, there is transcendent suffering. This suffering is the most difficult to endure and understand. We cannot understand it with our knowledge and logic. For example, Job’s friends thought his suffering was because of his sin, and Job’s wife said his suffering was God’s mistake. Job could not understand why he had to suffer, so he could not solve his problem. He just realized that God is Sovereign and maintains and controls everything according to his will.

 

It is never easy for us to receive suffering with joy. We Christians should be pure and joyful when we suffer. We should be able to see the good things which come after suffering. Our joy is not worldly joy (Matthew 5:11-12). We should be happy because we are in God’s sovereignty no matter what happens to us. The meaning of trials and suffering always has the same answer. God wants us to live obediently with His strength, wisdom, and power. 

 

Today’s Prayer: Pray for those nations in which war has caused great human hardship and many casualties. Ask God to bring peace-loving, stable governments to power in these places.

“이것을 너희에게 이름은 너희로 내 안에서 평안을 누리게 함이라 세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대 하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라” - 요 16:33

 

 

위의 그리스도께서 하신 말씀은 요한복음에서 가장 귀한 말씀중 하나로 가르침, 기억, 경고, 격려가 모두 포함되어 있습니다. 그리스도인이 된다고 편하고 쉬운 삶이 보장되는 것은 아닙니다. 예수님은 그를 따르는 자들이 세상에서 박해를 받고 환난을 당한다고 말씀하셨습니다(요 16:1-4). 거듭난 그리스도인들이 누리는 기쁨은 예수님께서 죄와 사망에서 승리하셨고 이 승리는 세상의 어떤 것으로도 변화되지 않는다는 것을 아는 데서 옵니다(롬 8:38-39). 그리스도께서 어려운 때가 온다는 것을 말씀하신 것은(요 15:20-21) 우리 믿는 자들이 놀라지 않고 안심시켜 주시기 위한 것입니다. 

 

최후의 만찬을 하시면서 예수님은 의도적으로 사전 경고의 말씀을 여러번 하셨습니다(요 13:19; 14:25; 16:4). 예수님의 사전 경고의 분명한 목적은 제자들을 격려하는 것입니다. 그리스도인들은 그러한 경험들이 하나님의 큰 계획이 일부라는 것을 반드시 알아야 합니다. 히브리서는, 특히 11장에서는 믿음을 "굳게 잡고" 하나님을 신뢰한 믿음의 영웅들을 기념하고 있습니다. 성경의 이러한 믿음의 영웅들은 하나님의 약속이 그들의 육신의 삶이 끝날 때가지 성취되지 않는다고 하여도 끝까지 인내하며 믿음을 지킨 것입니다. 

 

예수님께서 말씀하사는 "평강"은 세상적인 안락함이나 행복이 아니고 그리스도인들이 모든 염려를 하나님께 내려놓고(마 6:25-34), 하나님의 뜻이 이루어질 것을 신뢰하는 확신에 찬 "안식"(마 11:28-30) 입니다. 그리스도인들은 시련과 고난을 통해 실제적인 유익을 얻습니다. "내 형제들아 너희가 여러 가지 시련을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라" (약 1:2). 여러가지 고난이 있지만 전반적으로 그리스도인들은 세 가지 고넌을 당합니다.  

 

첫째, 원인과 결과의 고난이 있습니다. 이 고난은 사람이 무엇을 심든지 거두는 성경적 원칙에 따른 고난입니다 (갈 6:7). 고난과 시련은 말씀에 불순종하는데서 오며 탐욕은 우리 삶에 문제를 일으킵니다. 

 

둘째, 영적의 삶의 고난이 있습니다. 베드로는 우리가 이러한 고난에 직면 할 때 놀라지 말라고 말합니다(벧전 4 : 12-13). 우리 그리스도인들은 경건한 삶을 살기를 원하기 때문에 때때로 고난을 당할 때가 있습니다. 우리 그리스도인들은 세상의 빛으로 '하나님 나라'에 속해 있는 자들입니다. 그러므로 어둠 속에 있는 자들은 우리를 미워하게 되는 것입니다(요 1:1-13). 

 

셋째, 초월적인 고난이 있습니다. 이 고난은 이해하기가 가장 어려운 고난입니다. 우리 자신의 지식과 논리로 이해하지 못합니다. 예를 들어, 욥의 친구들은 욥의 고난이 그의 죄 때문이라고 하였고, 욥의 아내는 하나님의 잘못이라고 말했습니다. 욥 자신도 자신이 고난을 겪어야 하는 이유를 이해할 수 없었기 때문에 자신의 고난의 문제를 해결할 수 없었습니다. 그는 하나님이 주권자이시며 그의 뜻에 따라 모든 것을 유지하고 통치하신다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

 

우리가 고난중에 기뻐하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 그리스도인들은 고난을 당할 때 온전히 기뻐해야 하고 고난 후에 오는 좋은 것들을 볼 수 있어야 하고 우리의 기쁨은 세상적인 기쁨이 아닙니다(마 5:11-12). 어떤 일이 우리 삶에 일어나든 모든 것이 하나님의 절대 주권 안에 있는 줄 믿고 기뻐해야 합니다. 그리스도인의 시련과 고난에는 항상 같은 의미를 가지고 있는데, 하나님은 우리가 그의 힘과 지혜와 능력으로 순종하는 삶을 살기를 원하는 것입니다. 

 

오늘의 기도: 전쟁으로 고통을 받고 많은 사상자들이 발생한 나라들을 위해 기도하고, 하나님께서 이러한 나라들에게 평화를 사랑하는 안정된 정부가 수립될 수 있도록 기도하십시오.
