December 23 - Joy and Peace

 

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our LORD Jesus Christ.” – Romans 5:1

 

 

Now, Paul turns a corner to describe what we have gained in being justified by faith. We have escaped God's wrath, but being righteous before God means so much more than just not being punished for our sins. Before jumping into these benefits, it's important to remember that Paul is writing to Christians. That is the context of his comments in this section, which should not be misunderstood. 

 

Paul's use of the term "we" in this passage is not universal—it does not apply to the entire human race. He describes what is true for those who have trusted Christ's work for our salvation. His explanation of faith and belief in the last passages clarifies this. Paul is not saying all people everywhere have peace with God; only those who, as he and his readers had done, have believed in the God who raised Jesus from the dead.

It's also helpful to notice that Paul describes this act of being justified by God, of becoming a believer, as something in the past. For those who are Christians, that transaction is complete. Our status before God will never again be in doubt. Paul does not describe a process or a future event. Eternal salvation is accomplished once and forever when a person comes to faith in Christ. Paul begins by showing that those who have been justified in God's eyes have peace with God. Paul does not mean by this that we feel peaceful and experience no anxiety. He means that we are right with God. We are at peace with God from now and through eternity. This is possible only "through our LORD Jesus Christ."

Christians have the privilege of being joyful in any circumstance. However, many Christians feel obligated to be religious without experiencing the true joy of Christian living. Many start with joy as if they are newly married, but later, it becomes a routine in their Christian life. A Christian’s joy does not end there. We have more joy and hope as we are drawn closer to God. Our hopeless situation becomes a hopeful one. And sadness is turned into happiness. We are no longer under God’s wrath but are filled with the great joy of believing in Christ and being saved through Him. Through justification by faith, we have peace with God and receive blessings from God.  

 

Before we were born-again, we did not have true peace. God allowed us to sin before Christ came. “Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind” (Romans 1:28). As a result, we have fallen away from God and gone into the path of corruption and depravity. No human effort or endeavor could free us from God’s judgment. 

 

However, if we believe in Jesus Christ, we will have peace with God. “And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:20). Since Christ, who is the king of peace, is in us, we find and experience true peace. When Jesus was born, angels sang about peace. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). 

 

 

Today’s Prayer: “Let them turn to the LORD, and be will have mercy on them.” Pray that the unsaved close to you will return and receive God's mercy.

12월 23일 - 기쁨과 화평

 

“그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 얻었은즉 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님으로 더불어 화평을 누리자”  - 롬 5:11

 

 

바울은 우리가 그리스도를 믿음으로 의롭게 됨으로써 얻은 것들에 대해 말합니다. 하나님 앞에서 우리가 의롭다함을 받는 것은 하나님의 진노를 받지 않는다것 이상을 의미합니다. 우리에게 주어지는 혜택을 판단하기 전에 먼저 바울이 그리스도인들에게 이 서신을 쓰고 있다는 것을 아는 것이 중요합니다. 이것이 우리가 오해해서는 안되는 내용인 것입니다.  

 

바울이 11절에서 말하는 "우리가"는 온 인류를 의미하는 보편적인 말이 아닙니다. 그는 우리의 구원을 위한 그리스도의 구원사역을 믿는 자들에게 무엇이 참인지를 설명합니다. 이것은 앞 구절에서 말한 믿음과 신념에 대한 바울의 설명에서 분명하게 드러납니다. 바울은 모든 사람들이 하나님과 화평을 누린다고 말하는 것이 아니라 바울과 그의 독자들이 믿은 것처럼 예수님을 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 하나님을 믿는 자들만을 말하고 있습니다.

 

하나님에 의해 의롭게 되고, 신자가 되는 이 행위를 과거의 일로 바울이 묘사하고 있는 점을 아는 것도 도움이 됩니다. 그리스도인이 신자가 되고 의롭게 된 것은 이미 완료되었고, 하나님 앞에서 우리의 지위는 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 그는 과정이나 미래의 사건을 묘사하지 않고  영원한 구원은 그리스도를 믿을 때 단번에, 그리고 영원히 성취된다고 말합니다. 그는 먼저 하나님앞에서 의롭게 된 자들이 하나님과 화평를 누리고 있음을 보여주기 시작합니다. 이 말은 우리가 화평를 느끼며 염려를 하지 않는다는 뜻이 아니고 하나님과 바른 관계를 의미합니다. 지금부터 영원토록 하나님과 화평를 누리는 것은 주 예수 그리스도를 말미암아 가능합니다.

 

그리스도인들은 어떤 상황에서도 기뻐할 특권이 있습니다. 많은 그리스도인들 삶에서 오는 진정한 기쁨을 경험하지 못하고 종교적으로 살아야 하는 의무감을 가지고 있습니다. 많은 그리스도인들은 마치 신혼처럼 기쁨게 신앙생활을 시작하지만, 나중에는 믿음의 삶이 일상이 됩니다. 그리스도인의 기쁨은 여기서 끝나지 않고 하나님께 더 가까이 나아갈 때 더 큰 기쁨과 소망을 갖습니다. 우리의 절망은 희망이 되고 슬픔은 행복으로 바뀝니다. 우리는 더 이상 하나님의 진노 아래 있지 않고 그리스도를 믿음으로 구원받는 큰 기쁨으로 가득 차 있습니다. 우리는 믿음으로 의롭게 되고 하나님과 화평을 누리고 축복의 삶을 살아갑니다. 

 

우리가 거듭나기 전에는 참된 평화가 없었습니다. 하나님은 그리스도가 오시기 전에 우리를 죄가운데 두셨습니다. “또한 저희가 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하매 하나님께서 저희를 그 상실한 마음대로 내어 버려 두사”(롬 1:28). 그 결과 우리는 하나님을 떠나 패괴와 타락의 길로 들어섰습니다. 인간의 노력이나 공로는 우리를 하나님의 심판에서 자유하게 할 수 없습니다. 

 

우리가 예수 그리스도를 믿으면 하나님과 평화를 누립니다. “그의 십자가의 피로 화평을 이루사 만물 곧 땅에 있는 것들이나 하늘에 있는 것들을 그로 말미암아 자기와 화목케 되기를 기뻐하심이라”(골 1:20). 평화의 왕이신 그리스도께서 우리 안에 계시므로 우리는 참된 평화를 발견하고 경험합니다. 예수님께서 태어났을 때 천사들은 평화를 노래했습니다. “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 기뻐하심을 입은 사람들 중에 평화로다 하니라”(눅 2:14). 

 

 

오늘의 기도: “여호와께로 돌아오라. 그가 긍휼히 여기시리라” (사 55:7). 당신과 가까운 구원받지 못한 사람들이 돌아와 하나님을 긍휼하심을 받도록 기도하십시오.
