December 27 - God’s Infinite Knowledge and Psalms

 

“O LORD, you have searched me, and you know me.” - Psalm 139:1

 

David recalls that the LORD has searched him and known him. The word "searched" relates to digging deep into a mine (Job 28:3) or exploring a country. The same Hebrew root word is used for the Danites exploring a territory to claim as their own (Judges 18:2). David perceives that God has dug deep into his heart and uncovered everything there.

Certainly, the LORD knows the condition of the human heart. His diagnosis is accurate. Jeremiah states, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick" (Jeremiah 17:9). He also describes the LORD as searching the heart and testing the mind. “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:10).

Sin entered the heart when Adam and Eve sinned. It reached a fever pitch in the days before the flood, when "the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5). At one point in his life, David tried to hide the sin of adultery that he had committed with Bathsheba. Still, the LORD saw David's heart and exposed his sin (2 Samuel 11—12).

 

Psalms are one of the favorite books in the Bible among Christians. Before the New Testament was written, the people of God memorized and read the Psalms. Psalms require modern readers to spiritually fellowship with God through meditation and devotion. Therefore, today’s church, which needs training in devotion and worship, should listen to the lessons from Psalms. Five lessons are found in the Psalms. 

 

First, Psalms teaches us about the revival of worship and spiritual awakening (Psalms 100). Words of Psalms tell us about praising God and having devotion to God. They teach us the greatness and glory of God and why we should praise Him (Psalms 150). Today’s church puts much emphasis on programs and education. But Psalms teaches us that when we worship God, a church revival starts. Thus, Psalms invites us to have spiritual fellowship with God and teaches us how to worship God. 

 

Second, we can find ourselves within the words in Psalms (Psalms 81). No one in this world but God can know our minds and hearts as he does. In his book ‘Institutes of Christian Religion,’ John Calvin insists that we cannot know about ourselves unless we first know about God. 

 

Third, Psalms teaches us that our faith is in the grace of God, which is Jesus Christ (Psalm 51). Thus, Psalms is the gospel and Gospel-centered. This is why Reformer Martin Luther loved the Psalms. He said he learned that we were ‘justified by Jesus’ in Psalms before he did in Romans.

 

Fourth, Psalms deals with real problems of trials and spiritual warfare. The prayers in Psalms are crying out about the same problems we deal with today. In Psalms, God gives us comfort and freedom amid crises and difficulties. God not only forgives our sins but also heals our wounds. More importantly, He loves us eternally. Finally, Psalms teaches us to worship, testify to God’s power, work, and unite as a community. All churches in the world have one body. We have to renew our church as a body (Psalm 133). Therefore, our family and church must meditate on Psalms, giving us a new start in our spirituality.

12월 27일 - 하나님의 무한한 지식과 시편

 

“여호와여 주께서 나를 감찰하시고” - 시 139:1

 

다윗은 주님께서 그를 감찰하시고 아셨다는 것을 기억합니다. "감찰한다"라는 단어는 광산을 깊이 파거나(욥 28:3) 한 나라를 탐험하는 것을 의미합니다. 동일한 히브리어 어원은 단 지파가 그들의 영토를 주장하기 위해 탐험하면서 사용하였습니다(삿 18:2). 다윗은 하나님께서 그의 마음속을 깊이 파고 들어 마음의 모든 것을 나타내 보이셨다는 것을 잘 인지하였습니다. 

하나님은 분명히 우리 인간 각자 각자의 마음 상태를 잘 알고 계십니다. 하나님께서 행하시는  마음 진단은 정확한 것입니다. 예레미야 선지자는 "만물보다 거짓되고 심히 부패한 것은 마음이라"(렘 17:9)고 말하였고 또한 하나님은 사람의 마음을 살피시고 시험하신다고 설명합니다. “나 여호와는 심장을 살피며 폐부를 시험하고 각각 그의 행위와 그의 행실대로 보응하시나니”(렘 1
7:10).

아담과 하와가 범죄하므로 죄가 마음에 들어왔고, 노아의 홍수 전에 사람들은 죄로 관영하여  "여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고"(창 6:5) 대단히 분노하셨습니다. 다윗은 밧세바와 함께 범한간음의 죄를 숨기려고 힘썼지만 하나님은 다윗의 마음을 살피시고 그의 간음죄를 폭로하셨습니다(삼하 11-12장).

 

구약 시편의 말씀은 그리스도인들이 가장 사랑하는 말씀입니다. 구약의 이스라엘 백성들은 신약의 말씀이 있기 전이므로 시편 말씀들을 많이 암송하며 읽고 있었습니다. 시편은 현대인들에게 경건과 헌신의 말씀을 묵상하게 하며 하나님과 깊은 영적인 교제를 가르칩니다. 경건의 연단과 진정한 예배가 필요한현대 교회는 시편의 가르침에 귀를 기울여야 합니다. 시편에는 다섯가지 교훈이 나타나 있습니다.

 

첫째, 예배의 부흥과 영적 각성을 가르칩니다(시 100편). 시편은 하나님의 위대하심과 영광을 가르치면서 왜 하나님을 찬양하고 헌신해야 하는가를 교훈합니다(시 150편). 오늘날 교회는 부흥을 위해 여러가지 프로그램을 개발하고 성경 교육을 강조합니다. 이것들도 중요하지만 시편의 말씀은 하나님을 찬양하며 진정으로 예배드릴 때에 교회 부흥이 시작된다고 가르치고 성도들에게 하나님과의 영적인 교제인 예배로 초대하며 예배하도록 가르칩니다.

 

둘째, 우리 자신을 돌아보게 합니다(시 81편). 하나님 외에 아무도 우리의 생각과 마음을 아는 사람은 없습니다. 요한 칼빈은 “기독교 강요”에서 먼저 하나님에 대한 지식이 없으면 우리 자신에 대한 지식을 가질 수 없다고 말합니다. 

 

셋째, 우리의 믿음은 하나님의 은혜, 곧 예수 그리스도안에 있다고 가르칩니다(시 51편). 시편은 복음 중심적입니다. 마틴 루터가 시편을 사랑한 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 그는 로마서에서 이미 시편에서 우리는 “예수로 말미암아 의롭게 됨”(시 51편)의 진리를 깨달았다고 말했습니다..

 

넷째, 시편은 우리 인간의 실제적인 삶의 문제와 영적 전쟁을 실존적으로 다룹니다. 시편의 기도들은 오늘 우리가 싸름하며 부르짖는 기도입니다. 시편은 위기와 어려움 속에 있는 성도들에게 하나님은 위로와 자유, 죄  용서, 그리고 상처를 치유하사고, 영원히 사랑하신다고 가르칩니다. 마지막으로 시편은 예배를 어떻게 드리고 하나님의 권능을 어떻게 증거하며 하나님의 공동체가 어떻게 연합하고 일해야 하는가를 가르칩니다. 세상의 한 몸된 모든 교회가 새로워져야 합니다(시 133편). 시편을 읽고 묵상함으로 우리의 가정, 교회, 그리고 우리의 영성이 다시 새로워져야 하겠습니다.
