August 3 - The Afflicted and the Wicked

 

“But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor will the hope of the afflicted ever perish.” -

Psalm 9:18

Contrary to the horrific fate of the wicked (Psalm 9:17), those needy won't be abandoned by God or left in eternal death. This verse forms a deliberate contrast to verse 17. Verse 17 refers to the nations that forget God, but this statement speaks of the needy who will not be forgotten. 

Both aspects of the contrast matter here: those whom God "remembers" follow and honor Him. The wealthy unbelievers will still be held accountable, while even the poor who believe will be redeemed.It is possible for people in need to feel forgotten when material struggles arise. But ultimately, God provides for His people, even when they struggle. He will come to their assistance, always in spiritual ways and often in material ways. Furthermore, the poor who believe in Christ hope for a better life, and someday they will have it (Romans 8:28–30). 

The fulfillment of these aspirations awaits the establishment of Messiah's kingdom on earth. Jesus promised, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God" (Luke 6:20). In the kingdom age, everyone will enjoy security and property rights. No one will be poor or needy. Micah 4:4 promises, "They shall sit every man under his vine and his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken." The Bible often admonishes us by comparing the evildoers and the needy. The evildoers are generally disobedient and rebellious (Psalm 1:4). The Bible tells us that they go down to the grave where the dead are (Psalm 88:3-12). Yet the Psalmist speaks of the needy this way: “He (God) does not ignore the cry of the afflicted” (Psalm 9:12).
 

Many people were in poverty in Hollywood, California, in the 1960s. They were those pursuing a free and carefree lifestyle. They used drugs and engaged in prostitution in the name of brotherly love and peace. When these people were wandering the streets of Hollywood in despair, God allowed them to hear the gospel and moved their hearts. He brought many to repentance. The Jesus Movement started here. God remembered the needy and the afflicted by emptying their hearts. He brought them to depend on Him in their time of trouble. 

Korean churches experienced a great revival after the 1950s because the needy and afflicted humbly relied on God and received salvation through grace. To our eyes, evildoers may seem to prosper, but God says only the needy and afflicted have hope. Then where are the proud evildoers? Where are the disobedient empires that opposed the nation of Israel? God surely judges the evildoers (Psalm 1:6). We can see how God destroyed the evildoers in the Old Testament. Their names are forever ruined. 

We ought to live our lives righteously, being confident of the victory of God. And our ever-resisting enemy will surely back away, falling headlong and being destroyed. This is not our victor; God Himself is fighting in our place. The security of our lives is only in God’s protection. The LORD promised, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14). God’s presence in us is the evidence of salvation and the falling of our enemy. 

 

 

Today’s Prayer: Pray that those seeking God will be drawn to the one who does not show favoritism but “blesses all who call on him” (Romans 10:12).

8월 3일 - 악인과 궁핍한 자

 

“궁핍한 자가 항상 잊어버림을 보지 아니함이여 가난한 자가 영원히 실망치 아니하리로다” – 시 9:18

 

 

궁핍한 자들은 악인의 운명과는 달리(시 9:17) 하나님께 버림을 받지 않고 죽음에 이르지 않는다고 시편은 말씀합니다. 시편 9:18은 시편 9:17과 대조하여 17절은 하나님을 잊어 버리는 열방을 말하고 18절은 잊어버림을 보지 않는 궁핍한 자를 말합니다. 여기의 대조적 두 측면은 하나님이 기억하는 자들은 하나님을 존귀히 여기고 따릅니다. 궁핍한 자들은 구원을 받는 동안 부유한 불신자들은 하나님 앞에서 책임을 저야 합니다.   

궁핍한 자들은 물질적으로 어려울 때 잊어버림을 받았다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 백성이 어려울 때 필요한 것을 공급해 주시고 언제나 영적인 필요를 공급해 주시고 종종 물질적인 것을 주셔서 궁핍한 자들을 도우십니다. 그리스도를 믿는 궁핍한 자들은 더 나은 삶을 소망하며, 반드시 풍성한 삶을 얻게 되는 것입니다(롬8:28-30).

 

이러한 소망과 열망의 성취는 메시아이신 그리스도의 나라가 도래함으로 이루어집니다. 예수님은 "너희 가난한 자는 복이 있나니 하나님의 나라가 너희의 것임이요"(눅 6:20) 라고 약속하셨고, 하나님 나라에서는 모든 사람이 안전하고 재산권을 누리게 되며 가난하거나 궁핍한 사람은 없을 것입니다. 미가 4장 4절에 "각 사람이 자기 포도나무 아래와 자기 무화과나무 아래에 앉을 것이라 이는 만군의 여호와의 입이 이같이 말씀하셨음이라"고 약속합니다. 성경은 자주 악인과 궁핍한 자를 대조하여 교훈하며 악인은 하나님을 대적하며 불순종하는 자로서(시1:4) 죽은 자들이 있는 음부로 내려간다고 가르치고 있습니다(시88:3-12). 그러나 하나님께서는 궁핍한 자들과 가난한 자들의 부르짖음을 잊지 아니하신다고(시9:12) 말씀합니다.

 

1960년대에 남가주 LA 헐리우드 지역에는 가난하게 살아가는 노숙자들이 많이 있었습니다. 이들은 자유로운 삶을 살자고 외치며 자유분방의 쾌락을 추구했습니다. 약물남용, 형제애와 평화라는 구호 아래 매춘을 일삼았습니다. 이들이 절망 가운데 헐리우드 거리를 배회하고 다닐 때 하나님은 그들이 복음을 듣게 하시고 수많은 영혼들이 주님께로 돌아오게 역사하셨습니다. 여기에서 소위 예수운동(Jesus Movement)이 일어났습니다. 하나님은 가난한 자들과 궁핍한 자들을 기억하시고 마음을 공허하게 하시고 어려움 속에서 하나님을 믿게 하신 것 입니다.

 

한국교회가 1950년대 전쟁후 크게 부흥한 것은 수 많은 가난한 사람들이 복음을 받고 구원을 받았기 때문입니다. 우리가 보기에 악한 자들이 잘되는 것같이 보일지라도 하나님은 가난한 자들에게도 소망을 주십니다. 하나님 앞에서 교만한 악인들은 어디에 있습니까? 이스라엘을 대적한 불순종한 나라들이 어디에 있습니까? 하나님은 악인들을 반드시 심판하십니다(시1:6). 구약에서 하나님께서 악인들을 멸하셨고 그 이름은 영영히 도말하신다고 말씀합니다.  

 

그러므로 우리는 승리의 확신을 가지고 하나님 앞에서 의롭게 살아가야 합니다. 우리를 대적하는 원수 마귀는 반드시 물러나 넘어져 망하게 되어 있습니다. 우리가 승리하는 것이 아니라 하나님께서는 친히 대신하여 싸우시기 때문에 승리합니다. 우리의 생명은 오직 하나님의 보호하심 아래에서만 안전합니다. “내가 친히 가리라 내가 너로 편케 하리라”(출33:14). 

 

 

오늘의 기도: 하나님을 찾는 자들이 편애가 없으시고 “그를 부르는 모든 사람에게 부요”하게 하시는 하나님께로 가까이 나오도록 기도하십시오. (롬 10:12)
