August 30 - The World, Satan, and the Flesh

“As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one.”  Romans 3:10

Paul declares emphatically that no one will be justified by following the works of the law. Finally, though, he arrives at the good news: righteousness before God is available apart from the law through faith in Christ's death for our sins on the cross.

People who died spiritually are living by following the world, Satan, and their desires of the flesh. Paul said of us who did not believe Jesus in the past as “in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world” (Ephesians 2:2).

The word kosmos, which means the ‘world originally,’ means the wicked world. Following the ways of the world means the present evil age (Galatians 1:4). People have become slaves to social customs and the value system of the wicked age. The world controls spiritually dead people.

In the previous verse, Paul proclaimed that everyone, Jew and non Jew, is "under sin." He shows that Jews cannot hope to be shielded from God's judgment for their sin simply because they belong to the nation of Israel. Every person, Jew or Gentile, will be judged by God based on their right and wrong choices. By that standard, every person, Jew or Gentile, will be found to be "under sin" or guilty and deserving of God's anger.

Also, a spiritually dead person lives by following Satan. Paul describes Satan as “the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2).

The Bible says of Satan as “prince of their world” (John 12:3), “prince of demons” (Matthew 9:34), “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan is the ruler of the kingdom of the air. He commands many invisible spiritual creatures to work on a plan for the spirit of this age. A person who died spiritually can’t live without being stupefied to follow Satan. And the person who died spiritually lives according to the desires of the flesh (Ephesians 2:3).

The world, Satan, and the flesh control a spiritually dead person. All have sinned in Adam and are responsible for their sins (Romans 5:12-14). They have become the wrath of God (John 3:36). In the Bible, the corruption of a human means that man's character is tainted with sin. Namely, the existence of intellect, love, and righteousness of a human is corrupted and depraved (Luke 11:13). “As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” (Romans 3:10-11).

We are sinners not because we commit sins, but we can’t help but commit sins because we are sinners (Matthew 15:18-19).

We are individualists and egoists at birth. We can’t live without tending leaning toward evil. We desire to live with our carnal desires under Satan’s control. Thus, the Holy Spirit works in a person’s heart. And it renews a person, helps him to overcome the world, Satan, and our fleshly desires, and enables us to live for God’s glory.

Whenever our sins press hard against us, whenever Satan would drive us to despair, we must hold up this shield, that God does not want us to be overwhelmed in everlasting destruction, for He has ordained His Son to be the salvation of the world.” - John Calvin.

Today’s Prayer: Pray for more unity in his church worldwide, giving the world a credible witness to his love (John 17:20). Ask God to focus your eyes more on oneness than differences.

Prayer Pointer: God has editing rights over our prayers. He will edit them, correct them, bring them in line with His will, and then have them back to us to be resubmitted. – Stephen Cortts
