January 8 - Our Sovereign God
“The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles, and he exalts” - 1 Samuel 2:7
The sovereignty of God is the fact that he is the LORD over creation; as sovereign, he exercises his rule. This rule is exercised through God’s authority as king, control over all things, and presence with his covenantal people throughout his creation. Because God is tri-personal, his sovereign control is not impersonal or mechanical but is the loving and gracious oversight of the king of creation and redemption.
When people face suffering, they try to find the cause and reason. We have to understand that suffering comes to Christians whom God also blesses. Therefore, before we try to find the cause and reason for suffering, we have to believe in God, who blesses His people and allows suffering to happen to His people. Furthermore, we must understand that not all suffering comes from our faults.
Many of God’s people in the Bible underwent trials and tribulations without a valid reason. The best example is Job. “He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God and not trouble? In all this, Job did not sin in what he said… Then, they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him because they saw how great his suffering was.”(Job 2:10, 13).
God took all ten of his children without warning. God also took all of his property without warning. But Job was found worshipping God with a burnt offering when he faced such sudden pains and difficulties(Job 1:4-5). Surprisingly, Job did not blame nor curse God. He kept his faith. “At this, Job got up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said, ‘Naked, I came from my mother’s womb, and I will depart.’ The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.’ In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing”(Job 1:20-22).
Oppositely, he still worshiped and praised God because he believed God allowed suffering to happen to His people. The job was great in the eyes of the LORD because he knew that God is not a God who only blesses man for man’s pleasure. Our sovereign God, whom we believe, gives us good things according to His will and takes away according to His will.
Therefore, Christians should be satisfied when facing trials and troubles. On the contrary, we should praise and worship God, who works according to His providence. He wants us to grow in our faith through these trials and troubles. He wants us to be changed by them because we tend to depend more on God during troubling times. Subsequently, we try to find God’s will when we face trials and troubles. God allows us earthly pleasures; sometimes, He also allows us to suffer. God manages life, death, blessings, and curses. All suffering is allowed by God. Therefore, we have to strengthen our faith to overcome them.
“Prayer assumes the sovereignty of God. If God is not sovereign, we have no assurance that He can answer our prayers. Our prayers would become nothing more than wishes. But while God's sovereignty, wisdom, and love are the foundation of our trust in Him, prayer is the expression of that trust.” - Jerry Bridges.
Today’s Prayer: Pray for the salvation of each family member. Ask that children may come to trust Christ early and desire to become part of God’s forever family. Pray for your church’s outreach ministries, the leaders, and those being reached that God will use all these efforts to bring people to Himself.

1월 8일 - 절대주권자 하나님
“여호와는 가난하게도 하시고 부하게도 하시고 낮추기도 하시고 높이기도 하시는도다” - 삼상 2:7
하나님은 모든 피조물의 창조주이시고 유지 관리자이시며, 절대 주권자로서 자신만이 홀로 스스로 만유를 통치하시는 분이십니다. 그의 통치는 왕으로서 그의 백성들과 함께 절대 권위를 가지시고 만물을 지배하시고 그의 모든 창조세계 전반에 임재하시며 그의 역사를 행사하시는 것입니다. 하나님은 삼위일체 하나님이시기 때문에 그의 절대 주권적 통치는 비인격적이거나 기계적이지 않고 창조와 구속의 왕으로서 사랑과 은혜로 통치하시고 역사하시는 것입니다.
사람들은 고난과 환난이 찾아오면 원인과 이유를 알고 싶어 합니다. 먼저 하나님의 축복받은 모든 그리스도인들에게도 고난이 온다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 고난의 원인과 이유를 찾기 전에 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 복을 주시지만, 또한 고난도 허락하신다는 것을 믿어야 합니다. 더욱이 모든 고난이 우리자신들의 잘못 때문에 오는 것이 아니라는 것도 아는 것이 중요합니다..
성경의 인물 가운데는 타당한 이유 없이 고난과 어려움을 겪은 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 가장 좋은 예는 ‘욥’입니다. “그가 이르되 그대의 말이 한 어리석은 여자의 말 같도다 우리가 하나님께 복을 받았은즉 화도 받지 아니하겠느냐 하고 이 모든 일에 욥이 입술로 범죄하지 아니하니라 밤낮 칠 일 동안 그와 함께 땅에 앉았으니 욥의 고통이 심함을 봄으로 그에게 한마디도 말하는 자가 없더라”(욥 2:10, 13).
하나님은 욥에게 한마디의 경고도 없이 한 순간에 열 자녀를 데려가셨습니다. 그는 갑작스런 고통과 어려움 속에서도 하나님께 번제를 드렸습니다(욥 1:4,5). 그런데 놀라운 것은 욥이 하나님을 원망하거나 저주하지 않았다는 것입니다. “욥이 일어나 땅에 엎드려 예배하며 이르되 내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다 하고 이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 아니하니라” (욥 1:20-22).
욥은 하나님께서 자기 백성들에게도 고난을 허락하신다는 것을 믿었기 때문에 하나님을 예배하고 찬양하였습니다. 그가 하나님 앞에서 위대했던 점은 하나님은 인간의 쾌락 만을 위해 복을 주시는 분이 아니라는 것을 알았다는 것입니다. 우리가 믿는 절대 주권자 하나님은 자신의 뜻에 따라 좋은 것도 주시기도 하시고 또한 그의 뜻대로 거두어 가시기도 하는 하나님이신 것입니다.
그러므로 우리 그리스도인들은 고난과 어려움이 찾아오면 낙망하거나 좌절하지 않아야 합니다. 섭리에 따라 역사하시는 하나님을 찬양하고 예배해야 합니다. 하나님은 어려움과 환난을 통하여 우리가 영적으로 성장하기를 원하십니다. 환난의 시기가 하나님을 더욱 의지하는 기회가 되기 때문에 하나님은 우리가 변화되기를 기대하십니다. 시련과 환난이 닥쳐오면 하나님의 뜻을 찾기 위해 힘써야 합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 세상의 기쁨도 허락하시지만, 또한 고난도 겪게 하십니다. 우리의 생명, 죽음, 축복, 또한 저주도 주님이 주관하십니다. 모든 고난은 하나님께서 섭리 가운데 허락하신 것입니다. 고난을 이길 수 있도록 우리의 믿음을 더욱 견고하게 해야 합니다.
"기도는 하나님의 주권을 전제로 한다. 하나님이 주권자가 아니라면, 우리는 그분이 우리의 기도에 응답하실 수 있다는 확신이 없습니다. 우리의 기도는 소원에 지나지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님의 지혜와 사랑과 함께 하나님의 주권이 그분에 대한 우리의 신뢰의 기초인 반면, 기도는 그 신뢰의 표현입니다." - 제리 브리지스
오늘의 기도 : 가족 모든 식구가 구원을 받을 수 있도록, 그리고 자녀들이 그리스도를 믿고 영원한 하나님의 가족 식구가 되도록 기도하십시오. 교회의 전도사역을 위해 기도하고, 지도자들과 전도를 받는 자들을 위해 기도하고 이 모든 수고를 통해서 하나님께서 많은 사람들을 구원하실 수 있도록 기도하십시오.
