January 10 - An Intercessory Prayer

 

“Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them, his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down.” - Numbers 11:1, 2

 

 

Prayer, simply put, is talking to God. It is telling him our concerns, confessing our sins, and thanking him for what he has done for us. “The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.”(Psalm 6:9). When Jesus was on earth, he always talked to God. If the Son of God himself needed to pray, how much more do we need? If we do not know how to pray for a certain situation, we know that the Holy Spirit interceded for us, giving words we cannot express.  

 

In those times when it seems like God is not listening, we are to keep praying. We are told that God is close to us when we pray and that he is always listening. God is not distant, observing our actions from far away in heaven. He is always with us and will answer our prayers. “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him.”(Deuteronomy 4:7). We intercede for others, praying especially that they will do what pleases God.

 

The Israelites complained, and then Moses complained. But God responded positively to Moses and negatively to the rest of the people. Why? The people complained to one another, and more was needed. Moses took his complaint to God, who could solve any problems. Many of us are good at complaining to each other. We must learn to take our problems to the One who can do something about them. The Israelites’ rebellion and complaining continually tested God’s patience. Once, he was so angry over the idol worship that he threatened to destroy them all and raise a new nation through Moses(Exodus 32:9-14). Moses cried out to God on their behalf, and God responded with characteristic mercy.

 

Intercession was a way of life for Moses. He had been praying and fasting for his people all along, but at critical moments in their 40-year journey, he poured out his life for them in prayer. James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” Moses’ intercession for Israel underscores the truth of this statement. As we remain faithful to God, he will hear our cries too. Perhaps we may even influence the course of our nation. 

 

Prayer is vital to a believer's spiritual health. Prayer is a life priority. It connects me with God, and it connects me with God's provision for my life. Sometimes, we allow our theological convictions to become excuses for not praying. That is an unfortunate mistake. J.I. Packer explains that there is no conflict between God's sovereign foreordination and the effectiveness of prayer in the believer's life. "God foreordains the means as well as the end, and our prayer is foreordained as the means whereby He brings His sovereign will to pass." “Intercessory prayer is exceedingly prevalent. What wonders it has wrought! The Word of God teems with its marvelous deeds. Believer, thou hast a mighty engine in thy hand, use it well, use it constantly, use it with faith, and thou shalt surely be a benefactor to thy brethren.” – Charles Spurgeon.

 

 

Today’s Prayer: Praise God for his unfathomable love. Give thanks that he will let nothing separate you from the love. Confess to God any lack of love for Him. Commit yourself to love the LORD with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. 

Prayer Pointer: Now, as always, God discloses himself to “babes” and hides in thick darkness from the wise and the prudent. We must simplify our approach to Him. We must strip down to essentials. We must put away all effort to impress and come up with the guileless candor of childhood. If we do this, without a doubt, God will quickly respond. – A. W. Tozer

“백성이 악한 말로 원망하매 여호와께서 들으시고 진노하사 여호와의 불을 그들 중에 붙여서 진영 끝을 사르게 하시매 백성이 모세에게 부르짖으므로 모세가 여호와께 기도하니 불이 꺼졌더라” - 민 11:1, 2

 

 

기도는 하나님과 대화하는 것이며 우리의 문제를 하나님께 말하고, 우리의 죄를 고백하며, 하나님께서 행하신 일에 대해 감사하는 것입니다. “여호와께서 내 간구를 들으셨음이여 여호와께서 내 기도를 받으시리이다”(시 6:9). 예수님께서 지상에 계실 때 항상 기도하셨습니다. 하나님의 아들이신 예수님이 기도하셨다면 우리는 마땅히 더 많은 기도가 필요하지 않겠습니까? 우리가 어떻게 기도해야 좋을지 모를 때에도 성령께서 우리를 위해 중보기도해 주십니다.

 

하나님께서 우리의 기도들 듣지 않으시는 것 같아도 우리는 계속 기도해야 합니다. 기도하면  하나님은 우리에게 가까이 오시고 우리의 기도를 들으신다고 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 하늘 멀리에서 우리의 행동을 관망하시는 분이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리를 도우시려고 항상 우리와 함께하시고 기도에 응답하시는 분입니다. “우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리가 그에게 기도할 때마다 우리에게 가까이 하심과 같이 그 신이 가까이 함을 얻은 큰 나라가 어디 있느냐”(신 4:7). 우리는 사람들이 하나님이 기뻐하시는 일을 하도록 중보기도해야 합니다.

 

이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 하나님을 원망했고 후에는 모세까지도 불평했습니다. 그러나 후에 하나님은 모세에게 응답하셨지만, 이스라엘 백성들에게는 부정적으로 응답하였습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 원망해서 아무것도 얻지 못했지만, 모세는 모든 문제를 해결하시는 하나님께 문제를 가지고 중보기도했습니다. 우리의 문제는 원망하는 것입니다. 모든 문제를 해결하시는 하나님께 나가서 기도해야 합니다. 이스라엘 백성들의 원망은 하나님의 인내를 테스트하는 것과 같았습니다. 하나님은 그들의 우상숭배를 보시고 분노하셨고 이스라엘 백성을 멸망시키고 모세를 통해 새로운 세대를 세우기 원하셨습니다(출 32:9-14). 그러나 하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 위한 모세의 중보기도를 들으시고 특별한 은혜를 베푸신 것입니다.

 

광야에서의 모세의 삶은 이스라엘 백성을 위한 중보기도의 삶이었습니다. 모세는 40년의 광야 여정에서 위기가 올 때마다 생명을 내어 놓고 이스라엘 백성을 위해 금식하며 기도하였습니다. “의인의 간구는 역사하는 힘이 많으니라”(약 5:16). 이스라엘 백성을 위한 모세의 중보기도는 절대적이었습니다. 우리가 하나님께 믿음으로 행하면서 부르짖는 기도에 하나님은 받드시 응답하십니다. 우리의 기도가 한 나라의 역사와 흐름에 영향을 주고 바꿀 수 있습니다.

 

기도는 신자의 영적 건강에 반드시 필요하기 때문에 기도생활을 삶의 우선에 두어야 합니다. 기도는 나와 하나님를 연결시켜주고 삶의 공급과 연결해 줍니다. 우리가 기도하지 않는 것에 대해 신학적으로 변명할 때가 있습니다. 이것은 크게 잘못하는 것입니다. 제이 팩커(J.I. Packer)는 "하나님은 목적뿐만 아니라 수단도 미리 정하셨고, 우리의 기도는 그분의 절대 주권적인 뜻을 이루시는 수단으로 미리 정해져 있다."라고 말했습니다. 하나님의 절대 주권적 예정과 신자의 삶에서 기도의 효과 사이에는 충돌이 없다고 설명한 것입니다. “중보 기도는 매우 널리 퍼져 있다. 그것은 참으로 놀라운 일을 가져왔다. 하나님의 말씀은 그 놀라운 일들로 가득 차 있습니다. 신자여, 그대의 손에 강력한 엔진이 있고, 그것을 잘 사용하고, 끊임없이 사용하고, 믿음으로 사용하라, 그러면 그대는 반드시 네 형제들에게 은인이 될 것이다." – 찰스 스펄전

 

오늘의 기도 : 측량할 수 없는 하나님의 사랑을 찬양하고 영원히 끊을 수 없는 나를 향한  하나님의 사랑에 대해 감사하십시오. 하나님을 온전히 사랑하지 못한 것을 고백하고 마음과 뜻과 힘을 다해 하나님을 사랑하는 일에 온전히 헌신하십시오. 

기도 지침 : 지금도 하나님은 자신을 어린아이들에게 나타내 보이시고 지혜 있는  자들과 신중한 자들로부터는 깊은 어두움에서 자신을 숨기고 계신다. 하나님께 나아갈 때에 우리는 반드시 단순하게 나가야 한다. 우리는 반드시 비본질적인 것은 모두 버려야 한다. 우리는 다른 사람에게 인상을 주기 위한 모든 노력을 다 버리고 어린아이의 순수 솔직함으로 하나님께 나아가야 한다. 만일 우리가 이렇게 한다면, 분명히 하나님은 즉시 응답할 것이다. – 토저
