August 13 - Prior Relationship of Man

“Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

Christ reassures His followers that faith in Him is faith in God. To know Christ is to know ''the way, the truth, and the life'' (John 14:6). The words, actions, and miracles of Jesus should give Christians confidence to trust that He will make good on His promises. Among those is His guarantee that He is preparing to come for us so we can be where He is. Jesus also predicts the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This is only available to believers, and this Helper acts to guide, teach, and remind us. These words comfort the disciples and future Christians during hard times. Since Christ knew, in advance, what would happen, we can be even more confident in trusting Him.

John 14:1-14 continues Jesus' discourse with the disciples at the Last Supper. He has recently mentioned a traitor in their midst and predicted Peter's denials. That leads Jesus to reassure these men that He has told them the truth and has everything in hand. In this passage, Christ famously refers to Himself as ''the way, the truth, and the life.'' That is the sixth of seven such ''I Am'' statements in John's gospel. This section includes Jesus' words, personal experience, and evidence of His miracles as reasons to maintain trust.

Few verses are cited as often as this Scripture. Jesus is reassuring His disciples before His arrest and death (John 14:1–4). These words also broadly encourage believers to maintain faith in hardship. Confidence comes to Christians partly from knowing that Jesus is preparing to take us to be with Him. Traveling home is usually much less stressful than going on an outbound trip since we're much more familiar with the destination (Romans 8:18; Hebrews 12:2).

Today’s people pursue happiness and satisfaction instead of concern for their families and communities. They do not have the concept of responsibility. Therefore, problems caused by this phenomenon cause conflict between husband and wife and parents and their children. Eventually, these conflicts break up a family. Most Asians maintain family customs; they live with their elderly parents, the wife respects the husband, and the children respect their parents. These social values among Asians reduce social problems like rape, suicide, and paranoia. Oriental nations do not suffer the same social problems as Western nations do.

The ultimate source of human problems is separation from God (Genesis 2:17). Therefore, the first duty of a human is to know the Creator God and to give praise and thanks to Him (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

The greatest worth and meaning for a human being is glorifying the Creator God and living according to His will. Sinful human beings can be reconciled with God by repenting for his sins and receiving Jesus Christ as Savior (John 14:6). Once we have fellowship with God through Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of God’s care and protection. In every moment, we live under His protection and blessings. And our lives overflow with hope, joy, and comfort (Psalms 23:4). This is the Christian life and the gospel we have to proclaim. Thus, the Early Church said, “praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the LORD added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47). Only when we have fellowship with God through Jesus Christ, we have happiness. We are back to our first duty, which is glorifying God.

Todays Prayer: Pray by name for one unsaved friend or loved one. Ask God to open this person’s heart to receive the indescribable gift of salvation through faith alone (2 Corinthians 9:15; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Prayer Pointer: Prayer is not merely an occasional impulse to which we respond when in trouble; prayer is a life attitude. –Walter A Mueller
