January 15 - Overcoming Temptation

 

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but the world.” - 1 John 2:15, 16

 

 

From Adam's first man, people have been tempted to attribute their mistakes and sins to others. Adam sinned by attributing his crime to his wife. Eve attributed her sin of disobedience to the serpent(Genesis 3:12, 13). From that event, humanity yielded to temptation by blaming others and making excuses for mistakes. The Bible teaches us to take responsibility and account for what we have done for God. “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”(Romans 14:12). The Bible tells us that there are several steps through which we are tempted to sin.

 

First, we may be led to temptation by our desire and infatuation. The cravings of our sinful nature tempt us, the lust of our eyes, and the boasting of what we have. Jesus was also tempted by these things(Luke 4:1-13). But Jesus did not sin. Therefore, overcoming temptation is to live by the Spirit, not by our sinful lust. We are captivated by sin. Satan leads us into the temptation to sin. Satan knows our strengths and weaknesses. Satan knows best how to decoy and lure us by throwing the right decoy. 

 

Second, after the desire has been conceived, it gives birth to sin. Life according to the Spirit produces good, whereas life according to the desire of sinful nature results in sin. Sin never makes our lives beautiful. But after that, sin leads us into a pit of destruction.

 

Third, sin leads to death. It is said that “the wages of sin is death”(Romans 6:23). “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death”(Proverbs 14:12). The temptation to do evil leads one to be lured by a desire. A desire leads him to sin; in the end, this sin brings death.

 

Some think worldliness is limited to external behavior – the people we associate with, the places we go, and the activities we enjoy. Worldliness is also internal because it begins in the heart and is characterized by three attitudes: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. When the serpent tempted Eve(Genesis 3:6), he tempted in these areas. Also, when the devil tempted Jesus in the desert, these were his three areas of attack (Matthew 4:1-11). 

 

How can we overcome temptation? First, we must recognize that the temptation we face is the same one everyone encounters. Second, we need to depend on the LORD even more when we face temptations. Third, God provides a way out for us to flee from temptation(1 Corinthians 10:13). When we face temptation, we must depend on the LORD. Then, we need to be led by the guidance of the Spirit to turn our eyes and minds to the LORD and to pay attention to the voice of the LORD. Then, the LORD makes us triumph over all temptations. 

 

“A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” -

Today’s Prayer: Pray for your denomination’s world mission efforts as missionaries are recruited, trained, sent out, and supported. Pray for adequate funds to carry on and expand the work. Pray that unsaved persons who hear the Word of God will receive it and accept it not as the word of human beings but as it truly is, the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

1월 15일 - 시험을 이기는 길

 

“이 세상이나 세상에 있는 것들을 사랑하지 말라 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 아버지의 사랑이 그 안에 있지 아니하니 이는 세상에 있는 모든 것이 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕과 이생의 자랑이니 다 아버지께로부터 온 것이 아니요 세상으로부터 온 것이라” - 요일 2:15, 16

 

 

첫 인간 아담 때부터 사람들은 자기의 잘못과 죄를 다른 사람에게 책임 전가하는 시험을 받으며 살아가고 있습니다. 아담은 아내에게 책임 전가하는 죄를 지었고 하와는 자신의 불순종의 죄를 뱀에게 전가했습니다(창 3:12, 13). 이후로 인류는 다른 사람에게 잘못을 전가하고 변명하는 시험에 빠지게 된 것입니다. 성경은 우리가 행한 모든 일에 대한 책임을 져야 하고 반드시 심판을 받는다고 말씀합니다. “이러므로 우리 각 사람이 자기 일을 하나님께 직고하리라”(롬 14:12). 우리가 시험을 받고 범죄하는데는 몇 단계가 있다고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다.

 

첫째, 우리의 욕심과 미혹에 이끌리어 시험에 빠집니다. 우리 안에 있는 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕, 이생의 자랑 때문에 시험을 당합니다. 예수님도 같은 시험을 받으셨지만(눅 4:1-13), 범죄하지 않으셨습니다. 시험을 이기는 길은 정욕에 이끌리지 않고 성령으로 인도함을 받는 것입니다. 우리가 죄에 묶여 있기 때문에 사단은 우리를 시험하여 범죄하게 만듭니다. 사단은 우리의 장단점을 잘 알고 유인하고 유혹하는데 가장 알맞고 효과적인 미끼를 알아서 사용합니다.

 

둘째, 욕심을 잉태하면 죄를 낳습니다. 죄의 본성인 정욕에 따라 살아가면 범죄하지만, 성령을 따라 살아가는 삶에는 아름다운 열매가 있습니다. 죄는 결코 우리의 삶을 아름답게 하지 못합니다. 더욱이 죄는 우리를 멸망의 구덩이로 떨어뜨립니다.

 

셋째, 죄는 사망을 가져옵니다. “죄의 삯은 사망이요”(롬 6:23), “어떤 길은 사람이 보기에 바르나 필경은 사망의 길이니라”(잠 14:12). 사람이 악행의 시험을 받는 이유는 자신의 정욕에 유혹받기 때문입니다. 인간의 정욕은 사람을 범죄하게 만들고 결국 사망에 이르게 하는 것입니다.

 

어떤 사람들은 세상적인 것들을 외적인 행동, 즉 우리가 어울리는 사람들, 우리가 가는 장소, 우리가 즐기는 활동으로만 생각합니다. 그러나 세상적인 것들은 마음에서 시작되어 육신의 정욕, 안목의 정욕, 이생의 자랑이라는 세 가지 형태로 나타나는 것이기 때문에 내적인 문제인 것입니다. 하와가 뱀의 유혹을 받았을 때(창세기 3:6) 이 영역에서 시험을 당했고 마귀가 광야에서 예수님을 시험 했을 때에도 세 가지 영역에서 시험한 것이었습니다(마태복음4:1-11).

 

그러면 우리는 어떻게 시험을 이길 수 있을까요? 먼저, 우리가 당하는 시험은 다른 사람들도 동일하게 당하는 시험이라는 것을 알아야 합니다. 둘째, 시험을 만날 때에 주님을 더욱 의지해야 합니다. 셋째, 하나님은 우리가 시험을 피할 수 있도록 길을 열어주십니다(고전 10:13). 우리는 주님의 음성에 더욱 집중하고 우리의 눈과 생각을 주님께로 향하도록 성령의 인도하심을 받아야 합니다. 그러면 주님은 우리로 하여금 모든 시험을 이기게 하시고 반드시 승리하게 하십니다.

오늘의 기도 : 교단의 선교정책과 선교사들 모집, 훈련, 파송, 그리고 후원을 위해 기도하고, 충분한 선교 후원을 받아 선교 사역을 확대 나갈 수 있도록 기도하십시오. 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 불신자들이 하나님의 말씀을 받고 그 말씀을 받을 때에 인간의 말로 받지 않고 진정한 하나님의 말씀으로 받을 수 있도록 기도하십시오(살전 2:13).
